re: Why people who don’t seem to need it take advantage of government assistance

How fat were they? You forgot to mention if they were fat. Very important detail.
Only the younger lady was fat. It wasn’t ridiculous fat, though.

as the safety net expands, the workforce will be seriously depleted.
The bottom 30% of the US population doesn't have the Lutheran work ethic of Scandinavian countries.

Just as background info, the reason why all students get free school lunch at schools with a certain percentage of student's families living below the poverty line is that it would cost more money to keep track of accounts and determine who is and is not qualified than it does to just give everyone the food for free.

That said, when I suggested half-jokingly to my 16 year old daughter that we go get the free lunch pickup at her school, she gave me a lecture on the social contract and leaving it for people who really need it. I love that kid !
I understand what you (or rather, your daughter) means by social contract. However, I have friends with kids in school that offer free breakfast to all kids. So their kids get free breakfast. Both parents work good jobs, but they are paying the taxes, why not take the benefit if it is available to everyone?
As someone in the middle class, it feels like the government doesn't give a shite about me. I don't make enough money to be a rich donor, and I don't make so little money that they want to help me. I'm paying for rich tax breaks and poor subsidies.

You just witnessed liberalism in it's natural setting.

Who/what picked up the $387? Not that I don't believe you, just genuinely curious.
SNAP (food stamps)

Point of information: I don't know how govt assistance works....how do you know what they spent out of pocket?
It was clearly on the register display.

It's to remove the stigma and get more fed money. . Keeping up with accounts is easy to do.

Here’s a situation that I experienced yesterday that will illustrate my point. I was standing in line in the grocery store behind an older lady, a younger lady, and two children. They were dressed very well, and the children were playing on iPhones while they waited. They had three buggies completely full of items. Cashier finished ringing up the purchase, $394 and change. Amount they paid out of pocket, $7 and change. I make my purchase (paid for from my bank account) and leave the store. In the parking lot, same group is still loading food into a late model luxury car. It’s much nicer than what I drive. Pretty easy to understand, eh?
So you checked their financials and bank statements to know with 100% certainly they didn't need the assistance?

We took that La Purchase card after Katrina when they offered it...
Replaced all the food in my fridge and freezer that we lost.
Some of it was irreplaceable like a bunch of venison, shrimp and fish I had in the freezer.
There was a rumor after that the card was going to expire, so we went to Sam's, who started taking the card after Katrina, loaded up on ribeyes and filets..
Frick it, paid into the system since I was 13, Katrina was 27 years later...
Allstate gave me 2500 for a living disruption payment. No one was pissing and moaning about that...
Oh yeah, we also got money from FEMA...

I bet if you had followed them home, they live in a dump in a shitty neighborhood. Poor people tend to spend "their" money on dumb shite.
You’re probably right.

WIC only allows certain items to be purchased, they could easily do it with food stamps.

You’re doing it wrong, obviously. Perhaps the repo man was waiting on them to return home.

They could be borrowing or leasing the car.
They could be buying food for other people.
Mind your own business.

Well, they did have a year's worth of food in phone purchases.

Oh so he knows for a fact they bought those phones themselves, and bought them brand new? Perhaps they were a gift. Perhaps they were given to them by a family member upgrading to a newer phone.

I tried, but the older lady started hitting me with her diamond studded cane...dumbass.

The GF got us foodstamps we don't need.
I make enough for us to be pretty well off, but I'm also single and none. I get dragged over the coals with taxes.
Feel like this is a time to get mines back
I love being trashy.

Perhaps if they had family giving them 1000 dollar phones they should have given them grocery store gift certificates instead.

Where do you buy phones? I got a new iPhone in December and walked out of the AT&T store not spending a dime on it.
