4 wheelers, jet skis,

4 Wheelers - if you hunt or have teenage kids decent purchase / every place that sales these will give you a crazy deal if you have a job and decent credit. $75.00 a month for five years

Jet Skis - Waste of money and a bad brag, everyone knows that after about an hour on a jet ski you've done all they can do . Wil sit in the garage 90% of the year. Another $110.00 a month.

So they are bragging about taking on $175.00 a month in debt and you want to fight about it ? Typical Family Gathering

You can reasonably estimate what people make. I don’t know why you have to ask people.

My sister in law, who I think is kind of autistic, asks my wife this question every once in a while.

Her husband is kind of slow. They’re just simple folk. They think we live in a huge house and drive fancy cars, etc. They make about $13/$14 a hour.

I bet you’re so fancy that you also add ground meat to your Hamburger Helper.

Because people’s self worth is often tied to their salary. And their social media likes.

You obviously embarrassed him and his bragging was shut down.

I think it's rude, and you DEFINTELY don't ask a co-worker. I have had a couple of coworkers ask me the same question. I could lose my job for disclosing my salary. I'm a financial controller for a decent sized company. A couple of my friends have a ball-park figure, but I will never say exactly how much. That said, I know how much several people make because people talk. Additionally, I have a ball-park figure on how much people make. I make more than some here; I make less than some here. I'm not poor, nor am I rich. I definitely live below my means (I have a 2008 Toyota Camry which is about to hit the 200K mark ).

If it is your friend and you are trying to change jobs or think you are under payed it is okay.

Asking at a bbq in front of everyone isn't okay.

I don't see any reason why family would get upset about the conversation, unless your bil is realizing he's getting called out for making shite decisions. But that's on him, not you.

It’s none of your business but he’s a bitch for wanting to fight you over it. Obviously you are right and he’s spending way outside his means and you struck a nerve

Its a stupid social norm. People as a whole would have so much more leverage with employers if they were open with each other about their pay. The way it is now, a company can bring in an idiot and pay them twice what they're paying a workhorse in the same position and get away with it. Get open about discussing salary and that doesn't happen anymore.

I have a friend that is a good guy but very nosey. We moved to a new house last fall and ordered new furniture, paintings, etc and he inevitably asks what we paid for things. Sometimes I tell him but others I just say “too much” and he gets the hint.

Every so often he tells me his salary, bonuses and net worth and I think he wants me to tell him mine but I don’t take the bait and i know it drives him crazy. I certainly don’t ask him these kinds of questions and think it’s rude for him to ask me.
