This is what he assumed you were getting at, then you flat out said it. Who cares if he’s living paycheck to paycheck, or if they have money saved you don’t know about and are paying in cash? It’s none of your business.

I don’t know why it’s such a big deal, they aren’t spending your money.

It’s never ok to ask, and you have to be very careful who/how you disclose your salary to should that conversation come up.

People have a habit of thinking that at (insert their salary) + $20k that all of a sudden the higher salary person is rich, and therefore should pay for everything, otherwise they are a literal Scrooge.

After you broached the subject and he didn’t tell you, you should’ve realized he didn’t want to and just move on. The initial ask wasn’t the problem; it’s the goading type behavior you did on the follow ups.

Antagonize people and it’s predictable they’ll react in a confrontational way.

Since we’re on the subject of money, let me just remind everyone what it can’t buy.

I'm sure he would prefer you not know how underpaid you are.

Personal financial situation is just a very personal thing.

If I make very little, it’s embarrassing to share that. If I make a lot, I don’t want to share that and be accused of bragging or be labeled Mr. money bags.

Either way, don’t put someone in the position of being forced to share that information, because either way it’s something most people for obvious reasons are uncomfortable sharing. So the easy solution is just don’t ask.

If you know what someone does for a living, it’s fairly easy to get an approximate range online of what they’re making if you just have to know. There’s no reason to ask in the first place.

questioning someones income is always bad form. even if your bro-in-law is trash and will bankrupt himself and your sister.

In my opinion, asking someone what they make is tacky and trashy.

I’ve never had any problem telling people how much I make, but I’ve always made good money straight out of dental school. In today’s dollars,I started at around $125K at age 25. But I’ve always financed the crap out of stuff because I like to enjoy life, and if I want something I want it now. I’ve also never missed a payment on anything and make enought that I still have enough time to hoard enough money for later in life. I’m very self deprecating on how I manage my money.

Never understood why people get so upset over saying how much they make, unless the person asking knows he makes more and is doing it to put you down. But in almost all cases, the person doing the asking makes less and knows it.

Maybe we should all wear uniforms of some sort that reveal our income, educational credentials, job, etc.
