Why is asking someone what they make a big deal?

Sister and brother in law came over talking about buying all sorts of toys outside their means. 4 wheelers, jet skis, etc. I finally start joking about ‘someone making a lot of money’ or ‘who paying for that’. No ill will. Started asking bro what he makes per year.
He eventually pulled me aside and told me if I ask him that one more time then we’ll have to step outside.
I’m like, what bro? You acquiring a lot of shite and last I checked y’all aint breaking the bank. Pushing and shoving ensued until it all got broken up and now everyone is upset.
It’ll all be solved by people just being honest about their income. Only one can be hurt is ‘the man’. Never understood why it had to be a big secret.
