They’re descendants from a bunch of drunk Irish and Scots.

So, genetics.
You really think it's generic instead of being cultural traditions passed along generations?

nature vs nurture
Kentucky and eastern Tennessee is some beautiful, yet trashy AF shite

It's the same in the Ozarks; beautiful country punctuated by extreme trashiness.
I get the poverty and uneducated component - but it doesn't cost a dime to be clean. Don't decorate your property with junk, clean up your trash, wash your trailer.
I grew up poor as shite in South Louisiana, but we never looked the part.

Could say this about any state in certain areas.

Poor AF, Isolated, uneducated. It's like a Perfect Storm for trashiness.
In other words, think Mississippi Delta with mountains and opposite skin tones.... That's Appalachia.

The book “Hillbilly Elegy” is an interesting look into some of the dynamics of the culture of poverty in that region.

It takes forever to go anywhere in Appalachia. You can have areas 20 Miles apart that take a hour to go between.
Transportation is a huge issue in Appalachia.
West Virginia for example sits close to Pittsburgh, DC, Columbus etc and doesn't have a city over 51k ppl. That's insane.

Appalachia is horrible. Completely full of trashy people. Everyone should stay away.

Several years ago I had to spend a week in Charleston, WV and it was horrible. It's the largest city and the capitol but it is trashy along with the nearby towns like Nitro. The locals call the Kanawha River valley "chemical valley" because the pollution just sits in the valley. Supposedly the area has one of the worst cases of asthma and other respiratory issues.

Many parts of Appalachia are trashy but are nowhere near as bad as Culcha.
For every white trash Walmart looking person, you’ll also find a down to earth hardworking blue collar family.
The meth around East TN is pretty bad though.

Funny how all so many here call these states "trashy" yet they all rank ahead of Louisiana in education and best places to live...

So am I, and I’m not trashy like them.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m trashy, but not Appalachia trashy.

I'm an avid kayaker and spend a lot of time in the mountains, it's a lot of beautiful country but some areas are overrun with poverty.
it's easy to look down on people, but most of us would be in the same position if we were born in different circumstances.
