How is it isolated? It’s not like the west where there is nothing for miles.

What are mountains? How do they work?

Originally, travel was difficult. Isolation from commercial opportunity.
Opposite of Ohio river towns, from.Pittsburgh to Paducah.

Isolation limited access to outside stimulation. The fundamentalism of the region demands disrespect for new learning. Ole time religion. On faith.

Eventually coal was king.

Pitt lost debate with WV when I was there. Topic was western pa or WV: Most depressed part of Appalachia.

Several years ago I had to spend a week in Charleston, WV and it was horrible. It's the largest city and the capitol but it is trashy along with the nearby towns like Nitro. The locals call the Kanawha River valley "chemical valley" because the pollution just sits in the valley. Supposedly the area has one of the worst cases of asthma and other respiratory issues.

Yeah, I think you can separate Appalachia. WV and eastern Kentucky are a different level of poverty stricken when compared to TN/NC.

Every time i drive through I marvel at how pretty it is and then I stop to get gas or eat and im blown away at the type of people i see. Some of the areas I've passed through look like a third world country.

Why is it like that? When did that start?

W.Va was heavily reliant on the coal industry. Their failure to diversify their economy brought ruin to the rural communities.

Louisiana will suffer the same fate unless we learn how to attract new non-petro-chemical related industries.

The loss of blue collar work has killed the American interior.

Pittsburgh has revitalized their city.

WV is still struggling to figure it out

most of the folks from Appalachia with the will to work and provide migrated to parts of Ohio many years ago.

Google "hillbilly highway". The book Hillbilly Elegy is a fascinating read.

Plus, so many fricking opioids.

And Mountain Dew. Don't forget Mountain Dew. The term "Mountain Dew Mouth" is even an accepted term in Appalachia because of all the tooth decay.

Keep in mind, these people were isolated for a long time. So you didn't have a choice but to marry your cousin.

Public health advocates say soft drinks are driving the region's alarmingly high incidence of eroded brown teeth — a phenomenon dubbed "Mountain Dew mouth," after the region's favorite drink. They want to tackle the problem with policies, including restricting soda purchases with food stamps (now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and currently under debate in Congress).

"We are using taxpayer dollars to buy soda for the SNAP program, and we are using taxpayer dollars to rip teeth out of people's heads who can't afford dental care and are on Medicaid," says Dana Singer, a research analyst at the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department in Parkersburg, W.Va., who wants to see stricter regulations on sales of all sugary beverages in the region. "It makes no sense to be paying for these things twice."

Funny considering telephone service was just made 100% available in Louisiana roughly a decade ago.

quote:

Mink is an unincorporated community in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, United States, approximately 100 miles (160 km) south of Shreveport. It is in Kisatchie National Forest. Mink was one of the last places in the United States to receive traditional landline telephone service. Service began in February 2005, when BellSouth spent $700,000, or about $47,000 per phone, to run a cable of 30 miles (48 km) through thick forests to the hamlet.[1]

The cigarettes and soda are definitely a big cause of the obesity epidemic. It's sad to see these young kids that are extremely over weight and struggling with diseases like diabetes, etc. in large part because of the choices that their parents are making for them in terms of their diet. To be fair, it doesn't help that a bottle of soda and some trash snack foods are cheaper than a bottle of water and some of the healthier options for low income families.

I'm an inshape, 6'3 210lb. guy in my late 20's and I get stared at like I'm the fish out of water for not having a gut and kankles in the more rural areas that I go to when I'm out back packing. All that being said, I still love this area.

Don’t know why y’all are speaking poorly f these people. They are the reason your beloved Trump (bow heads, moment of silence) is President. You should be on your knees thanking them for voting against their interests.

You have two extremes in Appalachia. I deal with a lot of coal companies.

There are the filthy rich and 100 yards from their gated hill-top mansions are sheds that look like someone built them on Survivor.

Absolutely gorgeous to drive through anytime of year.
