I'd say it was because of the white people.

Keep exploring those woods and Appalachia will like you too.

*cue banjo music*

Amazing view though. The people may be questionable but that doesn't tarnish the beauty of nature.

Strip mining eliminated most mining jobs, and the economy centered around coal. All the smart people left to find other types of work, leaving behind the not-smart people. It's called a Brain Drain.

My wife is from a small town in South Western Virginia. In most cases for young folks the only thing to do is graduate high school and leave town. Most folks do that very thing.

If you don't do that you are pretty much screwed. There are no jobs at all. The land is too expensive to purchase if you want to farm. Add on top of that plenty of drugs to go around and you have the recipe for the disaster that you see in small town Appalachia.

To add to this the folks there are literally unlike any other folks I've me on earth and I've been a few places. What I mean is they are "petty" and hold a grudge like no on I've ever seen. If someone does well in life they aren't happy for them, they deride them. It's the strangest thing I've ever seen. All of my wife's friends husbands (who aren't from there) have all at one time or another asked me, "Is there something significantly wrong with you're wife's family"?

Short story... One of my wife's friends have two uncles that live next door to each other. They haven't spoken in over a decade over a 20 dollar bill one believes he is owed. It's insane but if you spend any length of time there it's not surprising in the least.

Tell you what, go to an Eastern Kentucky Baw and tell him how ignorant and poor he is and see what happens.

Proud folks in those parts and they hate arrogant outsiders.

Maybe it's because you're a pretentious douche. Did that ever cross your mind?

Pitt lost debate with WV when I was there. Topic was western pa or WV: Most depressed part of Appalachia.

This is some of the dumbest shite I’ve ever read. Pittsburgh has been named the #1 city in America on multiple occasions.
