re: What Kind Of Music Listener Are You?
Posted by Bowstring1 on 6/15/25 at 11:16 am
In a lot of ways, I think I am all the above. when I was younger, I would look at album, cassette, or CD cases from front to back to find out who played what instruments and wrote the songs. if I am listening to music, one of my pet peeves is for somebody to talk to me where I can’t hear. In most cases, I prefer live music or live recordings to studio albums. And totally despise most of the newer music because that id overproduced taking away from true musicianship

re: Advice for Supporting Kid’s Interest in Music

I have three boys ages 13, 15, and 18 who play music and in fact, have a band and play gigs weekly. I on the other hand, could not carry a tune in a bucket. I told my wife when the oldest was six years old that my biggest regret was not learning an instrument and I wanted to at least give our sons a chance. She started him with piano and guitar and he took it from there, he later inspired the others. We always have music playing around our house and I have explained to them the difference in not just listening, but actually hearing music. We have always encouraged them, but never have been too pushy or try to enforce our will.

This has been a pretty cool thread!, I do believe that just because a band or musician is from the south does not necessarily make them southern rock. In my opinion, Southern rock were bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd,Marshall Tucker band, Allman Brothers band, CDB, etc…. It was and is bands and music that just had a feel to it…. much like the people from this part of the country.
re: I don't know how regular folk get by with multiple kids. The cost is absurd.

This exactly!!! My situation is almost the same but with 4 boys. 5 to 18 yrs old. All are very active, including sports, but it is only for fun. No travel ball. 13,15,and 18 yr old Earn anywhere from $300-$700 a week playing music and working part time.. I make decent money but probably not what a lot make but our family focus is on spending time together whether that’s at work, hunting, etc….. not saying at times that the financial situation does not get tight, but it can definitely be done. My wife has 2 degrees but chooses to stay home ,cut hair on the side and teach our children.

It is really amazing how talented a lot of the “southern rock” musicians were! You can go to YouTube and watch their live performances and it is amazing. Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly hatchet, Elvin Bishop…. Etc..

1970s rock ‘n’ roll specifically southern rock
re: Why were musicians/vocalists so much more talented back in the day ?
Posted by Bowstring1 on 5/26/25 at 9:38 am
This is accurate! I believe before MTV that a musician had to be very talented and good at what They did in order to be heard.
