For anyone out there with loved ones that are going through addiction and are hesitant to call it a disease, I highly recommend that you watch “Pleasure Unwoven” by Dr. Kevin McCauley. McCauley is a former military flight surgeon that got hooked on opioids following a surgical procedure, and in the fallout from that experience, decided to explore addiction further. In the documentary, he goes through the neuroscience behind addiction and explains it in a way that a layperson can follow. Again, I highly recommend it.

Just about every disease process we know about has more than one variable that contributes to its development in some way. Oftentimes it’s a combination of several variables whether it be genetic, environmental, and yes, even lifestyle/behavioral.

I am in no way denying that personal agency has at least some role in the development of addiction, but to say that it is not a disease is an oddly ignorant take.

Correct. I’d take it a step further and argue that the physically altered neural pathways and anatomical/functional changes seen in the brain in addiction don’t fit any definition of “disease” - classical or contemporary.

ETA: that’s why all these addiction research institutions investing millions of dollars to develop targeted therapeutics to specific areas of the brain is an absurd waste of time and resources. Willpower is all that is needed.
