I couldn’t wait to get my license, already had my motorcycle license. Studied the little manual and aced it, it was easy.

The book my kids had to read and study involved math equations and such to the point it would have been difficult for me to have passed it at their age. But I don’t know if that’s a factor or not.

My 12 year old grandson would try to get one right now if he could.

Letting an underaged kid drive around without a license is incredibly dangerous, stupid, and illegal. It has NOTHING to do with manliness. You don’t have to be a fricking idiot to be manly.

I paid $2k cash for Jeep wrangler as my first vehicle. My insurance was like $18/month too. Gas cheaper as well.

That doesn't exist anymore. You could actually work a summer job at 15 and 16 and then buy a car. I don't think you can do that anymore.

First, all of the illegals took those jobs and cars aren't that cheap anymore.

I used to love looking at car ads because there were actually affordable vehicles for teens back then.

Getting your DL and being able to drive used to be a big dose of freedom for teenagers. Able to explore and figure out shite on your own.

Gen X has completely deprived these kids from ever having any expectations of that. Kids are on camera leaving the front door. Hangout with your friends in the driveway and their entire conversation can be picked up through the camera. Leave the house and GPS is tracking every move they make.

It’s subconsciously ruined them for seeking those freedoms out

My son is 17. Had to make him get his license. Now he has my old truck and never drives it.

My oldest got his the first day he was eligible…

My 14 year old is already looking at vehicles.

But I do see a lot of kids that don’t care. They have friends that drive. Most schools here can cost hundreds of dollars to park. Cars aren’t cheap. Insurance isn’t cheap. People live in houses that can’t accommodate more than a couple cars. But also, a lot of kids just don’t do shite. They and their friends are content playing games and talking to each other that way.

The list is long. Who knows.

Not these kids today. They are pampered and mostly retarded.

You’ve got a distorted view of reality, dude. Every generation talks shite about the next, I get it. But I can tell you that my kids that can work… do. They are also great kids and great students. They have chores and consequences. I can’t think of any kids we know that aren’t similar.

Maybe where you are it’s 100% that way, but there are a TON of really good, very smart, and exceptionally talented kids coming up today.

I see a lot of promise with a lot of the kids these days. Extremely talented. Work circles around boomers that refuse to leave the office

I didn't pass until I was 24

I was youngest in my class so by the time I could learn all my friends had already done so and would always offer to pick me up, then I went to college and couldn't afford to and had no need to drive.

When I got a job it was initially walking distance and then when I moved jobs it was quicker to get the train than drive (20mins vs 40mins) so agajn didn't need to.

Ended up learning because I was going to have to get a job somewhere I didn't want to live so learnt so I could drive there rather than move.

Never felt it inconvenienced me but if I couldn't drive now I'd be screwed. You adapt to your circumstances and it's easier to it need something you've never had than to lose something and not have it.

Less cultural emphasis — getting a license is no longer seen as the big milestone it once was.
Why not? Is it not still the easiest way to get away from your parents?

You can leave whenever you want, and go wherever you want. Public transportation isn't doing that.

I wanted a car to date. End of story.

Our daughter grew up on a small island. We bought her a car at 16. She moved away to college two years later with less than 50 miles on the car. Now she puts about 100 miles a month on the car.

Depending on how old you are changes this perspective. Imagine having to drive to get a pizza, see a movie, buy music, or buy clothes? I would think the boomers would ask about where teens have sex if they aren’t driving cars.

My daughter did a similar thing with her first car. We live in Central (slightly North of B.R.) and she got a boyfriend in Clinton that didn't drive. She put over 20,000 miles on her car in one year, driving back and forth to see and transport his worthless arse. When I realized just how much I was paying for gas and routine maintenance, I put a stop to that very quickly.

I immediately limited the number of trips she could make, and they broke up soon afterward.

Are there cars cooler than what we had? Definitely safer. My S10 Blazer was pretty dang cool for 1989. Looks funny now:

My 15 year old son is acting the same way. I would buy him a car, but I can't get him motivated to get a license.

I don't understand it. Getting my license was the first real taste of freedom.

Coincidentally, my 8 year old daughter can't wait to drive. She's already car shopping
