New Orleans, as much as this place dogs it, is truly special. Sorry but it is. The things that suck are truly God-awful, maddening, and 3rd world, but if we are all honest about it, the things that are good just don’t exist anywhere else in this country and make it truly special. I will concede that it has diminished in my mind post-Katrina and Mitch’s idiocracy.
Moving from uptown New Orleans directly to Dallas intensified this observation for me.

It's also true, especially considering that Baton Rouge really isn't that big of a city.
There's several great venues (Spanish Moon, The Varsity, Manship, Red Dragon, Atomic Pop Shop, Mid City Ballroom, Dyson House, etc.
There's a bar for just about anyone's tastes from intimate cocktail lounges, to dirty blues joints, to debaucherous college bars, old man bars, service industry spots, hipster beer pubs, sports bars, soccer pubs, brew pubs, distilleries, etc.
The restaurant scene is actually sneaky great as well.
There's a pretty good number of festivals (Jambalaya Jam, Roux Rally, Fest For All, Blues Festival, State Fair, Funk Fest, White Lights Night, Hot Art Cool Nights, Northgate Fest, Spanishtown Mardi Gras, St. Patty's Day Wearing of the Green, etc)
There's lots of weekly and monthly events like the Happy's Running Club, Songwriters in the Round, Farmer's Market, Mid City Rising, Mid City Merchant's, etc.
There's a lot more to BR than meets the eye.

I moved from Broadmoor New Orleans to the metroplex, and while I enjoyed my time there, it just wasn’t the same. It was too plastic-y for me. Not enough grit and realness and honesty. If we ever get true leadership in New Orleans, the sky would be the limit.

I have a sister who still lives 2 blocks from our childhood home, and her husband grew up less than 2 miles away, so I know people like that are common here.
But lots of us leave. More than half my HS class lives out of state. I lived in Atlanta for three years and had two stints in Texas. If New Orleans is home, it calls you back when you leave.

Regardless you can go to the worst shithole in tbe world and there will always be a percentage of the natives who can't concieve of living elsewhere!
Are you so far removed from family and tradition and a sense of place that you are unable to grasp that!

I'm from Arlington, Virginia which has been ranked one of the top places to live for lots of tangible reasons. Yet it just doesn't seem to have the charm or life of New Orleans. It's too sheltered and as someone said earlier "plastic". New Orleans is doing well in retaining being a place with experiences you cannot find anywhere else. I feel like New York and Chicago and other major cities simply become bigger clones of each other as time goes on.
