Your implication is that crime is random in Baton Rouge and they were simply lucky; basically everyone on this board who has lived in Baton Rouge could sketch out a “crime heat map” on command. Don’t spend time in those areas and the odds that you’ll be a victim of a crime fall off a cliff.

To put it another way, if we split Baton Rouge into two cities, north and south, South Baton Rouge would become a “safe city” overnight.

The fact that there are dangerous areas seven miles from my house doesn’t particularly affect me, regardless of both locations technically being in the same city.

Some people can be happy anywhere (home is where the heart is, and all), and that’s a very positive way to approach life.

It doesn’t negate the fact that Baton Rouge has earned its reputation as an objectively shitty city by measurable standards—crime, education, poverty, health, insurance rates, infrastructure, etc.

Then you are an outlier. Consider yourself fortunate. Just because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem.

Either you don’t have kids or can afford private school. Again, you’re fortunate.

BR is great for these things. I’ll agree.

I don’t understand why there is such a bad reputation of the city.

I loved my time in BR. I could probably live there still. But do you REALLY not understand the negative boxes it checks?

I actually love living in BR because it is a central location for all kinds of stuff... not to mention some of the best food around with influences from Nola, Cajun country, and standard deep south cuisine

7hrs I can drive to the mountains
4.5hrs I can drive to Houston
4hrs I can drive to white sand beaches in Perdido
3hrs I can have my boat in the water at Grand Isle
1hr I can drive to MSY and take a 1hr flight to Orlando
1hr I can be in St Francisville or Mandeville for a weekend
10mins I can drive to Tiger Stadium and Alex Box

Oh, and I have fresh seafood available year round

I've been here 40yrs and never had a problem

agree...and why most people with money send their kids to private school. i am sure this is more common than you think in most democrat run cities.

Have you driven in the city after a medium size or larger rainfall lately?

I have. I've never seen a city that was built to basically requires the interstate for intracity travel and also has an obsession with creating single entrances for large areas (residential, commercial, etc.).

That is the big misnomer about our schools. It isn't "most people with money" , it is a factored in expense to everyone in this city. Private school comes before anything. It was second only to mortgage in level of importance with my kid.

This is like saying why does everyone worry about cancer? Just because you've never had it, doesn't mean you can dismiss it. Or that you are immune from it.

And if you've lived here for thirty years and cannot see the negative changes that have occurred you simply have chosen to ignore them.

Visiting and traveling to other states/cities is pretty eye opening to me on how shitty of a place BR is.

It’s an ugly city for one. Abandoned and ghetto, trashy looking buildings all over the place. Everything is an eye sore. The roads suck arse and it’s a constant bumpy ride commuting in this area. You better check your car batteries often cause some of these bumps will knock a loose battery out. And then don’t even get me started on the large amounts of trash that just seems to be everywhere.

And that’s all just the tip of the iceberg. So much more that’s wrong with BR. Other cities and states don’t seem to have these kinds of issues, at least not widespread like it is in BR.

I have visited MANY of the 100 largest cities in the country. That’s kind of my go to when traveling. I’ve spent significant time in the major Texas cities. There’s tons of construction in SA, Austin, Houston, even here in Corpus Christi. It’s all for growth. A massive suspension bridge just opened up here, and while it took a while (Covid + investigation into design firms), it’s a huge build. I see the train wrecks in BR and LC for new bridges, and it’s sad.

The construction in other major cities is an issue because of rapid growth in those metros. BR isn’t rapidly growing. A little foresight and teamwork by city leaders and you can knock out some things quickly, but it’s a shitshow.

As someone mentioned…it’s bad when your major artery for local travel is a busy interstate. No loop. No other freeway bypasses.

ever been to dallas?

Dallas is ten times the size of BR so of course there is more traffic volume. But I tell you, driving around Dallas is not nearly as frustrating. At least the traffic engineers there try. BR seems proud of its traffic.

Go live somewhere else for a couple years and report back.

It’s amazing how many problems you can overlook because it’s just what you’ve known your entire life - until you go somewhere that doesn’t have them.

So the primary benefit is you have to leave to have nice things, with the exception of being subjugated to the LSU fanbase.

I'm convinced.
