Crazy that I just ran across a story about a lady "rescuing" a pit in Metairie because "it is a sweet boy just trying to get cool air & water"

Later that day, she updated her story about having to bring it to the spca because it killed her cat

I lived in the hood for a few years and I learned that having a big dog is an excellent deterrent for nonsense.
And it doesn't even have to be mean. When I lived in the Ellick garden district, the locals were terrified of my Vizsla. There could not have been a more harmless animal in that area than him

Pitbulls and Pitbull mixes are one of if not the most common in shelters.

Thats one reason why.

The social aspect of that comes from you living in a rough area so you want a rough and tough dog.

quote:

Some research in sociology suggests that for marginalized groups, owning a “tough” dog becomes a form of status symbol or identity marker—similar to fashion or cars.

Pit bulls have a reputation for toughness, loyalty, and being protective. For people in difficult environments, owning a dog that signals strength or protection can feel practical and empowering.

Retrievers are my go to breed. I like goldens a little more than labs though. They seem a little more laid back than labs. It's take labs a little more than 2 years to calm down. Goldens are always calm.

Is the genesis of it not simply that those "trashy" people generally live in lower income areas, which generally means more crime and such, and having one or two pit bulls may deter some of that? Then it grows and becomes cultural

They all say a different flavor of the same thing also. "My pit would never attack someone", or "it's the way they're raised" or some similar crap until they chew a kids face off unexpectedly.

I'd venture to guess that percentage wise very few pit bulls attack or kill, but when they do, their bite strength and tenacity causes more damage than the beloved chihuahuas they like to compare them to. I'd be fine eradicating both species. Humanely of course.

Pittbulls are one of the most popular dogs in the US. The highest % of embark DNA test are American Pitts. So maybe majority of Americans are trashy?

I live in a nice neighborhood where you never see a dog that's not on a leash. But, yesterday I got home from the gym, got out of my vehicle and a 50-60 pound pit comes running at me. I stood my ground. He got close then, put his head down and started wagging his tail. I petted him until his owner came running after him. I understand they can be dangerous dogs, but just don't be a pussy and they're fine.
