you can't get shite for $5k. I'd rather have my kid drive have reliable transportation.

My oldest grandchild has told me she would like to have my truck. I will give it to her.

We were going to pick up some pizza and I opened up the 2UZ-FE into passing gear. She smiled.

It has 200,000 miles on it, the upholstery is shot and the exterior paint shows some rust, but I have done the engine work myself. It will outlive me.

Anyone who is blood related or has married into my family, I would.

The thing is that any person who asks for that outside of children will not only sign their life away in a separate contract, but they also will already be very aware that I will take collections into my own hands should the need arise.

That's why nobody ever asks me to do that....

It depends- if they needed help because there was some financial emergency that depleted their savings and/or ruined their credit, but I knew they were good for it, I would definitely co-sign.

If they spent money with reckless abandon and were always broke, then I would have a hard time with it.

It also depends on my ability to absorb the loan or payments in the event they did default.

I did for one kid because he had a zero credit rating. When he was 19 he applied for a car loan and the bank was floored. They said it was like he didn’t exist to the ratings agency. He had never done anything with credit and was already in the army.

Here we are 8 or so years later and he sits at an over 800. He’s never missed a payment on a thing.

Nobody. If it's not mine, my name isn't going on the loan.

I bought a car ( used, $20,000 in cash) for a family member. Put it in her name from the start. We figured out the payments based on what interest I could be making on that 20,000 in CDs.(her credit was not good, so her interest rate would have been high had she financed it) She pays me monthly like clockwork. If i die before it’s paid off, it is hers free and clear, she would not owe “the estate” anything.

That only works if you have trustworthy family members.

I would prefer that over co-signing, but 20 thousand probably about as high as I would be willing to risk.

I signed for my young brother-in-law once when I was married to his sister.

We had an understanding--------you make your payments-you drive the truck. You miss your payments and it falls on me---I drive the truck until you pay me back.

He missed one payment, I got the call and let him know I was going to be driving the truck if he didn't make it right-----he did the next day and never missed one again.

I would sign for my wife, daughter, sister. They all make more than I do now. My wife is going to need a new vehicle sometime in the next year or 2. FL has a new law I am interested in looking into.
quote:

Effective July 1, 2026, Florida HB 999 allows for the optional use of gold and silver coins as legal tender for debt payments and purchases, aimed at combating inflation. This voluntary, non-mandatory law designates certain pure, marked precious metal coins as legal currency, exempting them from sales tax.
Key details of the new Florida law (HB 999):
Effective Date: July 1, 2026.
Voluntary Acceptance: Businesses are not required to accept gold/silver coins; it is entirely voluntary.
Definition: Covers gold and silver coins that are "solid, pure" and marked with weight, purity, and a refiner/mint identifier.

I think this will be great, unless the dealerships try to say a $5k gold coin is worth $2995. I also do not want paying with gold or silver to create a taxable event.

I'll probably have to do it for my kid when she finally buys a car. She'd probably be the only one I'd cosign for.

I signed for my daughter and she has only asked us to make two payments in the three years that she has been paying off the car, and she apologized. Totally worth it.

I never asked anyone to cosign anything for me.

Another thing you may want to consider. Paying with gold or silver in FL comes with Zero sales tax. That could pay for your vacation to go fishing with Lanier.

No one.

Each kid got a hand-me down and I got a new one each time.

Do not have any items that require a payment, own everything, and like it that way. Will sign nothing, for me or anyone else, that requires a payment plan.

Debt free and will stay that way. If I can't pay cash, I don't get it.

I only cosigned one time. For my wife. Then we got divorced and she missed two payments and it hurt my credit. But she caught back up.
I wouldn't do it again. I don't even have a car note anymore.
