Charlotte is a major city that checks all the boxes Atlanta does, but Atlanta does everything CLT does on a much bigger scale.
Also the baws who say Atlanta has no southern vibe...yeah in Midtown certainly not, but come up to the Buckhead or Vinings areas and it’s certainly there.

It would be my choice.

Virginia is no longer Southern, so Richmond is out.
Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, New Orleans seem like they would be the front runners.
Charleston is a great city, but not for a capital.

Atlanta
Runners up would be Memphis and New Orleans.

Capitol?
Atlanta, as much as I hate to say it. Centrally located, economic powerhouse, population higher than anywhere else not Texas.
The South actually stretches from Maryland to Texas and includes Oklahoma and Florida. Culturally, you have the Deep South as the core of that and Texas is bigger and more prosperous than any other part, but it can't be the capitol. It's too far West.
So, Atlanta checks all of the boxes, as was said earlier.

Agree, as much as I would like for CLT to have the "crown", ATL deserves this distinction for many reasons- More centrally located and no other southern city can match all it offers. I would still rather live in Charlotte though

Anywhere along 30A.
I nominate Rosemary Beach.

Atlanta has ZERO impact on the South beyond the state of Georgia
Imagine thinking that the economic and business center of the South and the transportation hub for the entire region (and beyond) has "ZERO" impact on the South beyond Georgia. I can't even with these people

Atlanta is easily near the top in the region in both. That the Saints have a title and NOLA and Charleston, etc. have better food doesn't mean they're not. Point is, and I'm sure you agree, Atlanta would qualify in pretty much every category.

Atlanta is so non-southern in many ways, though.
Maybe Nashville?
Uhhhh have you been to Nashville lately? It's almost lost its southern charm altogether imo.

Nashville or Atlanta. I’d vote Nashville.

Hi Charlotte.
But Atlanta is like twice your size. If you want to argue Charlotte is a major city, be my guest. It's certainly a significant city in my mind, but I'm not sure it's in the Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, etc. category.

Possibly the most ridiculous thing I will see on TD today.

Why is it "the 2nd dumbest thing you've read all day" that some people use a different metric than you to answer a hypothetical question?
I actually understand where you are coming from. Perhaps I should have judged the question a little more harshly since it was not specific in the meaning of the word "southern". If I see the "capital of a region" somewhere, Im going to assume we are talking economic capital. What city has the most influence, regardless of culture, in that region. I like most of the cities that have been mentioned, but Atlanta is far and above the most influential city/metro area in the south if you exclude Texas.
My apologies on the statement.

Atlanta has no impact on Louisiana, VA, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, or Missouri. Each of those states are driven by an economy that could act completely independent and without impact should ATL be nuked tomorrow.
Dallas and Houston have more impact on this part of the South than ATL ever will.
ATL has a big airport...ok so the frick what? Dallas, Houston, and CLT have them too.
People are calling for ATL because of its size and economy. OK, how about Houston since it has nearly 5 times as many people and GDP of $478 billion compared to ATL's $324 Billion. Or Dallas which boasts similar numbers to Houston.
