Interesting question as I approach retirement in about 5 years.
On the one hand, I keep thinking how fed up with society I am in general and how I want to be far away from people-- out in the country on a ranch or farm type situation, up in the mountains, or on the coast somewhere.
But on the other hand, I look forward to continuing to do things in retirement that I like to do now: play golf (more than I do now), go out on my boat (more than I do now), play pub trivia with friends every Wednesday night, go to LSU football games, Saints games and Pelicans games. That is counter to the "getting away from people" deal.
Plus sometime in the next few years I hope to have grandkids that I can spend lots of time with and spoil (and those grandkids will almost certainly be here where I live now).
So I guess I am ready to stay put. House is paid off later this year, wife and I have a fine income now and will continue to have one in retirement; family and friends are all here, and I will just spend more time on the things I want to do like boating, fishing and travel, and no longer think about or worry about the minutiae of work problems (deadlines, going after new work, dealing with clients, continuing education, etc.) every day.

I moved to NW Arkansas for an office job, but now work remote and can live pretty much anywhere. This is by far the best place I ever lived so I bought a place and plan on being here a long time.

Big lake nearby.
College campus.
Great music scene. (Close enough to Denver for big acts)
Good (relatively speaking) food.
Lots of beer.
Bikeable.
Less murders in a year than BR has on a summer weekend.
Legal weed.
People are generally nice.
Poudre River goes through town. (Tube or kayak friendly)
Hour from RMNP.
Everyone is fit. It is jarring coming back to Louisiana and seeing how fat everyone is.
Big lake nearby.

I assume you are from the SE? If so, you’d probably enjoy a place like Bend, Oregon. If you could not tolerate the overly left-wing politics you could try Provo, Utah.
I suggest these because people looking for a fresh start generally want something exotic compared to what they are used to. You are used to blazing hot summers and mild winters with no snow. This would give you an opposite climate with great outdoor living.

If I could take my entire family, probably north ark, central north Tenn, I'd choose to escape this heat.
