If you're having to work or retiring that answer can be different.

If retiring, France has probably the best tax treaty with the US and there are some incredible towns there. They are one of the only countries (maybe the only) that honors Roth IRA withdrawals being tax free.

Strasbourg is right on the border with Germany and is a gorgeous old European town.

I've heard Montpellier is nice for expats and you're minutes from the Mediterranean.

Granted you are then subject to French politics, so something to be cautious of there for sure.

If I were working and could do it remote I'd probably do Thailand for a few years. Super cheap, good internet generally, big expat population. Would be a neat experience for 3-4 years then move on.
