I like to grocery shop at upscale neighborhood stores that don't except EBT Cards like Mathern's on Highland Rd. Calandro's on Perkins is also a good shop and they have some nice talent shopping up in there as well.
Stay away from the big box stores.

I always wear a colored shirt unless I'm going to work out. It takes 0% more effort.

Betty Boop pajamas and shower caps at Walmart are disgusting

have said before on this board that a grown man should wear a collared shirt and long pants in public and got downvoted. This place is as trashy as anywhere else.
They need to know what kind of shirts and pants and underwear for that matter so they don’t sweat their balls off. I had to be educated.

Is OP saying to wear collared shirt to go to grocery store?
This is how I interpreted it.

Its not the clothes. Its just your personal appearance and how your clothes fit.
A fat slob could be wearing ill fitted khakis and an oversized polo and look far worse than a fit guy wearing shorts and tshirt.

I think the change started in the 80s with shows like Roseanne. It continued when Married with Children
If I remember correctly, Dan always wore a collared flannel shirt and Al Bundy always wore a shirt with a tie unless he was wearing a t-shirt with a slogan on it like "No Ma'am." So the t-shirt was for a comedy effect.

The question is not why would you put on a collared shirt to go to the grocery store. The question is why do you not already have on a collared shirt?

flip flops
I have worn flip flops daily for a decade, while working in insurance, construction, and restaurants overseas, and even running for public office.
Does that make me a slob, or a success?
Guess it depends on who answers.

I usually wear a coat and tie when going to Kroger, but lately with the heat it’s just a collared shirt and tie.

A few weeks back, I was in line at the bank behind nine people. And I noticed that all nine (both men and women) were not just wearing junky t-shirts, but their entire attire was either dark-gray, mid-gray, or black. I mean, good grief. It's summer. And everybody is dressed in what looks like the old parodies of Soviet Russia in deepest winter. It was so drab and depressing. What became of colors? Same thing with cars these days, which seem to be only white, gray or black. America just doesn't look like America anymore. Neither the people nor the places.

Navy blue is out of the question?

I've been watching some videos of years past. Dress was way more classy back then. Fedora hats, jacket and tie. I could do that again.
They didn't have athleisure and other comfort clothes materials back then. They were sweating their nuts off in 80 degree weather and I can at least be comfortable.

When I was in college I used to brag about how my clothes including but not limited to my sunglasses, wallet, belt, all of which were and are imported from Italy, and not even including my genuine bona fide Swiss Made timepiece costs more than a month's worth of people's paychecks
I have owned so many nice things in my lifetime that I feel berry blessed
Let me suggest you acquire a recent edition of Harbrace Handbook.

My minimum to leave the house is a brightly colored banana hammock and 4 splashes of English Leather.
I was trying to think of a response, to that post, that involved nudity. Yours definitely exceeded what I would have come up with.

Are you expecting people to go to the grocery store dressed up?

I often go to kroger in Costa sandals and Costa glasses, with Aftco shorts and Aftco tee.
Most of us live in a world where we look down on people who even know these brand names.
Just dress nice. No need to exhibit brand names. It comes across as pretentious.

When formal hiking became the normal work attire during Covid, collared shirts got elevated.

I'm in better shape than 98% of the population. So I will wear whatever I please.
I can understand the need for dressing up if you are over compensating for looking like a slob
