Look at the way people dressed for Mardi Gras parades back in the day...

The men’s clothing department was probably just about finding the right size for a handful of items they carried.

If I could, I would dress every day like I was in Peaky Blinders.

I respect how they used to dress back then, but I'd be damned if I'm wearing slacks and a button down anywhere besides work or another important event( ie funeral/wedding)

I enjoy being comfortable over trying to impress people I don't know nor even care for.

Was watching North by Northwest the other day and was impressed. The effort to appear like an adult. Granted it is a movie ...and Cary Grant. But it reflected the day.

I've always just worn jeans and tshirts. "Dressing nice" usually just means dressing uncomfortably.

I was always told to always look presentable when you go out. You’ll never know who’s looking.

Not saying to leave the house 7 days a week in a full suit, but don’t go to Wal-Mart looking like you just rolled out of bed.

Really? Who is doing the choosing? Even in the 60s and 70s when there were terrible clothing choices - the guy usually asked the girl out.

That's a trope. Guys seldomly ask girls out without first being lured in. Girls make themselves available, basically a deer walks up to you pointing a rifle at its chest and ask you to pull the trigger... you sexy hunter.

The question is why is the deer walking up to certain hunters. Are they walking up to a hunter that will use the meat, the skin, and will mount the head on the wall to cherish....or Will they walk up the hunter that'll just shoot them and leave the dead carcass to rot?

The reason people stopped dressing that way was the 60's counter coulter revolution.

They hated their stiff proper parents and wanted to be nothing like them. So they burned their bras, did LSD, and all the other hippy shite. Society chases the trends of the youth and fashion followed and the suit and die died with the hippies.

The funny thing is all those assholes turned into worse people than their parents they were protesting.

This. Hammer-------> Nail.

David Horowitz touched on it in Radical Son It makes sense.

They did. Just look at photos of old football games, baseball games, etc. it looks like the horse races of today.

Also, people didn’t have the clothes they had today. If you weren’t wearing a suit, you likely had on white tee and jeans, and pajamas at night. Very simple

Depends on your age, gender, and definition of nice. My guess is women from the Elizabethan Age would shite on any female not wearing an ankle-length dress, regardless of social class.

Because polyester didn't exist, and cotton and wool don't stretch well (and were expensive to produce).

My wife and I discuss this a lot lately.

Now it’s not like we’re a couple cosmopolitan social jet setters, (we’re very small townish) but we’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t even dress up for special occasions such as weddings, funerals, baptisms, or holiday events.

I like jeans as much as anyone but, c’mon you don’t have a pair of khakis and a button down shirt to attend a wedding / reception?

If I give a dude a moisture wicking t-shirt in south Louisiana in 1920, he’s going to chunk that suit so fast...

When I was a kid it seemed like people dressed up a lot more than they do today to go to LSU games.

I think this has to do with the change in what people are allowed to wear at work.

But even church.. Not that I go to church often, but when I was a kid, the majority of men would have a suit.. Or a nice coat on. Today, wearing a good pair of jeans and their best Columbia fishing shirt is considered "dressed up" to some.
