It's also tied into America getting so fat. Go walk around outdoor anywhere- the mall, Home Depot, a bank, etc. No one wears tucked in button downs because they're too fat. And I don't mean 20-30 pounds overweight, I mean 50-100 pounds.

When people realized how you dress is a phony facade that doesn't reflect what kid of person you are, how good a worker you are or much of anything other than you are a sheep that does what he is told.

Wrong. You must be younger than 40.

Television did it

Our species’ ability to see ourselves in full video/audio for prolonged periods of time as anonymous observers had profound effects that we still haven’t fully grasped. I think it collectively gave us a form of psychosis that we continue to struggle with.

In general I agree with you, but go luck at studies regarding the impact of clothing or appearance and its impact on people's initial impressions of you. Whether you like it or not, it makes a massive difference.

Since I wear scrubs to work the only two occasions I wear button ups are weddings (with suit) and funerals. I suppose if I ever switch jobs, I’d have to put one on with a suit.

Anywhere else its golf polo with either stretchy jeans or performance slacks. I dress for comfort, because quite frankly I can give a frick less what others think.

Look at the way people dressed for Mardi Gras parades back in the day...

This is actually how I dress for night parades. Slacks, button up, tie, cashmere sweater, top coat.

We did it as a joke in college and it 1000% makes the experience better.

Right. And look at some photos of fans at an LSU game or shoppers on third street in Baton Rouge in the 60s and before! People definitely seemed to care more about how they dressed.

I'm not sure if you meant this sarcastically, but you're absolutely correct.

Most people dressed that way because there weren't alternatives. If you took the average Joe from the 1940s and let him wear Ex-Officio boxer briefs, a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, and Nike athletic pants, he'd be 95% covered in materials that didn't exist in clothing in his day. It's not like the clothing options in 1940 were vast.

Part of it is a lot of people don't want to flaunt or whatever you want to call it that they have money. I'm sure most people watched that Michael Jordan documentary on ESPN last summer. I remember a segment where they showed how he got all dressed up in a nice suit and tie. They wondered why he would go through all the trouble when he was just leaving his hotel and going across the street to get dinner I think it was. Jordan said something to the effect "this might be the only time a fan gets to see me I want to live up to their expectation". That's not word for word what he said but that was the basic point. Imagine that now...look at a guy like Mark Cuban when he's not on Shark Tank he often looks like a bum how he dresses.

This ^^^. People got fat, lazy, and sloppy looking since then - especially women. I remember when women were pretty.

I would just like to not see your underwear hanging out the back of your pants. If grandmas did this, it would stop with the quickness.
