Most people dressed that way because there weren't alternatives. If you took the average Joe from the 1940s and let him wear Ex-Officio boxer briefs, a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, and Nike athletic pants, he'd be 95% covered in materials that didn't exist in clothing in his day. It's not like the clothing options in 1940 were vast.

there's a middle ground though.

my WWII vet grandfather (and all of his friends) would never go out for dinner in anything less than a clean, ironed collared shirt, tucked in to clean, ironed slacks. he wore a suit to church. maybe wore shorts if it was very hot and in the middle of the day in Florida.

I have worn flip flops on a daily basis since I was 14, unless I was playing sports, at a wedding, or when I worked in DC for a couple years.
I live in gulf shores now, but even if I didn’t, I’d still find a way to be without shoes.
To hell with societal standards.
Do what you wanna.

They didn’t have mass produced T-shirt’s and comfortable clothes.

You had a few shirts, jackets, and pants and you rarely washed them. And they lasted a very long time. You wore a jacket everywhere because your shirt was gross and jackets and pants can be washed less when made of wool and real fabric instead of synthetic nonsense

Why do you find it offensive to wear shorts to church?

I'm not condoning it, but the facts are what they are.

If you spent 25 years of your life dressing a certain way, I don't expect you to change much for the remainder of your life, regardless of the options.

If you're born in the late 1940s, polyester and other synthetic fabrics were coming into the mainstream by the time you were choosing your own clothes. That's a much different situation than the previous generation.

Philosophically and analogously speaking, what’s celebrated more these days: European marble or African mudbrick?

Everyone knows the answer, and you can apply it to most aspects of cultural life. We no longer aspire to marble or grandeur, but celebrate instead the so-called egalitarian and antiracist mud huts.

The 1960s were the death of a lot of great things in our society, including dressing the right way.

Nobody is stopping you from dressing nice everywhere you go. Be the change you want to see in the world, and stop worrying about what everyone else wears.

One only needs to go to an airport and see the human circus clowns waiting to board. While dressing up with suits and ties isn’t really needed, you shouldn’t show up in the pajamas you slept in the night before.

Jesus Christ... is the kind of guy who would not gaf about people wearing shorts to church.

Perhaps but he is the kind that would give a shite about the attitude likely accompanying delressing like a slob to church.

Well the exact clothing items yes, but that’s 1000% the point I was making. Leisure clothes weren’t invented yet.

There's a sign on our courthouse door that says no pajamas because otherwise people would wear pajamas.

Dressing up was a sign of self discipline, among other things.

We no longer have any self discipline.

Matthew Mcconaughey had a funny story when he told his dad the same thing. His father’s response was Jesus also walked everywhere.

I was raised to see church as a place to show respect. Sure you can show respect in shorts, but are we going to sit here and argue that there is no difference?

I was raised Catholic but haven’t been practicing in nearly ten years and I would still never set foot in any type of church or temple, Catholic or not, in shorts.

Name Confirmed

Self-respect much brah?

Respect any institutions?

You’ll answer in the positive but you can’t know what you don’t know.

Or more generally to your mentality-
