If you are planning on paying for the group meal here's a little tip: don't let the people know that you are paying for the meal before they order.. Those frickers will order the most expensive items on the menu.
I knew a person that would never pay for themselves.. People started comparing notes and word got out. They were completely oblivious and wondered why they "missed out" on future dinners. I can't stand users.. sponges..

You have shite friends

When I know I'm picking up the tab, I don't say shite, because people will have a tendency to order cheaper instead of getting what they actually want.

Splitting checks like that is trashy.

Nah, handing a waitress a half dozen credit cards with hand written notes all over the receipt is trashy.

Someone picking up the check and people saying "hey, looks like I owe you about $X with tip, sent" saves the entire debate this thread is structured around.

Now, people figuring out what they owe to the penny and sending that is at least a quarter trashy, if not half trashy

Agreed.

"let me throw you $40 for tonight"

Not trashy

"you owe me $36.59" while still sitting at the table

Oh absolutely. In my experience, it's more of a situation that everyone is trying to pick up the tab, so "allowing" people to pay you back ends the argument. If anyone said they were picking up the tab but wanted to be paid back immediately, I would probably laugh at them

No one offers to pay for anything for me. They decidedly pay to be in the presence of greatness. My excellency commands them to pay for my time.

This would happen more in our friend group. I also have friends who announce they are about to order stupid expensive things before anyone else thinks they are going to pick up the check

Also when you have friends in way higher tax brackets than you sometimes all you can do is say thanks. You and they both know you can't afford what they are offering.

Like others have said, depends on what that something is.

Cocktails at a bar or a casual lunch at a cafe, I'd not balk if they wanted to pay, but would make sure to offer to split the check, pay outright myself or say "Next time is on me" and make sure that is how the next tab goes down.

I won't take advantage of other people's good nature.

Is it from a company expense account? Did I invite them to lunch?

Lots of variables to consider but I pay for drinks and meals from time to time with friends and don't expect anything in return.

I go with a version of 2/3

That is the quintessential group of women having lunch move, squabbling over everything they ordered.
