I have a hard time putting any really big city up here. Philly may suck, but there’s major sports teams, universities, tons of history to explore, and some good old money neighborhoods. If you live there, I imagine life is pretty good.

I feel like that doesn’t really apply to a place like Jackson, MS.

Detroit and it’s really not close. That city is a 3rd world gigantic shithole. You can literally buy entire blocks of houses on auction for a dollar

Why would you say Vidalia when Ferriday is ten minutes away and looks like Liberia in places?

You ain't lying. Driving through Ferriday on 84 and 61 is like a nuclear zone. I've always heard that there is a nicer part though but can't confirm.

Detroit is just horrible....

But Flint Michigan is and absolute shithole.....

Can confirm. Detroit is bad, but appeared to be rebounding when I was up there somewhat and it has a cool vibe about it. Although, crime about on par with anywhere in Louisiana. Flint and Saginaw on the other hand... I knew I was in the right place when the gas station had "Welcome Sag-ahnistan. If we don't get you the first time we'll get you the second time" with a gun on it

Ferriday and Lake Providence are horrible towns. East St. Louis is a pretty bad and scary city.

The areas around Lake St. John and Lake Concordia are beautiful parts of Ferriday. The town itself is a disaster.

Amarillo, TX and Salina, KS. Bakersfield and Riverside, CA are up there, too

I've lived and been all over this country, including many places already mentioned in this thread, and Gary would be my #1. It's about as bleak as life can get in a Western country.

I'd take Philadelphia any day of the year over Greenville, MS. Incidentally, twice as many people are moving to Philadelphia from NYC as the other direction.

I got stuck there for work for 2 weeks maybe 15 years ago. My previous job took me all over North America to big and small cities. I went to a lot of really shitty and nice places in the decade I worked there. Gary was the worst. And I've been to Ferriday and Selma
