Brad Dauragthy (#1 NBA pick in 1986) lived next door to my Aunt in North Carolina and I would hang out with him during the summers when I went to visit. He wrecked his 3 wheeler into a tree and broke his headlight and instead of getting it replaced he just bought a big flashlight and duct-taped it to the 3 wheeler.

One of my clients has tens of millions of dollars. Rather than buying a new desktop he has me upgrade his six year old ones to Windows 10.
I run a Zorin distro on all of my PCs. Because of hoe stripped it is, I'm still using a Dell d430 laptop

I have one rich relative. In college I basically was his driver on the weekends during duck season in exchange for free food and good duck hunting.
We stopped at a walmart once because he forgot to bring a whistle for the dog. After looking around, he could not make himself buy the $1.00 whistle because he knew he had two or three at home.

I knew a guy probably worth around $10 million who drove a 20 year old piece of shite car, got clothes from the Goodwill, and bought store brand groceries only. He grew up dirt poor so I guess old habits die hard.
Very generous though to others. He would often take the whole office out to lunch, etc. and gave kick-arse Christmas presents.

My Uncle has Oil Money and refuses to buy cable. Only 3 channels. He will not buy bottled water saying he can have it free from the faucet. He drives a Mercury Grand Marquis. But yet, has a Rolex Watch!

I knew of a guy years ago that everyone thought was destitute. He dressed in old, dirty, almost threadbare clothes and he has been seen digging in dumpsters presumably for food. He also walked up and down the main road in our little town picking up aluminum cans to make a little money.
Most people felt sorry for the old guy and would routinely buy him food and bring it to him as he picked up cans. He finally passed away and we all found out that he was, and had been for many years, a multimillionaire. Apparently he had sold a couple of inventions when he was young and made a mint. So he just lived the way he wanted with no concern about money lol

When my grandma feeds us, we have to check the expiration dates on all of the ingredients she used. It’s not uncommon to find canned goods from the 90s in her pantry

J. Paul Getty for the win... In 1973 his 16-year old grandson was kidnapped by Italian gangsters. They demanded $3.2 million. Although J. Paul was worth well north of $5 billion at the time, he refused to pay, saying he would 'call their bluff'.
After the gangsters sent the child's ear to a newspaper by post, his father (J. Paul's son), begged J. Paul to give him the money. J. Paul loaned him $2.2 million as this was the maximum amount allowed as a tax deduction. He charged his son 4% interest on the loan.
When the ransom was paid and the child released, his mother asked him to call his grandfather to thank him for helping. J. Paul refused to take the call.
Want more? Getty owned a 72-room mansion outside of London worth over $60 million (1959 dollars). He put dial locks on all the telephones in the building and installed one pay phone for the guests. At this time he was the richest person in the world.

My Grandfather. Born in Europe who grew up with nothing. Moved to USA in his 20's with not a dime to his name and retired a millionaire in his early 50's. Splurged at times but did a lot to be cheap at others.
My favorite was after Katrina. His house had 3.5 feet of murky water. We got in there after a month to save china, silverware, etc. He was trying to save everything that was beyond saving. We had to pry a 2.5 gallon can of unopened olive oil from his hands that was covered in rust. He and his kids got into a big fight. ??

I know a guy who's worth something like $500M, watched he and his family pull up to his brother's house to visit as they were passing through on a family trip. Their "luggage" was actually a bunch of Hefty garbage bags.

i don't know if it's that cheap, but the wealthiest guy i know owns a 1mm+ house outright that he paid cash for and his gigantic pantry has a section of stolen CFA sauces.
the guy also exclusively dresses in marshall's polos and academy nikes and drives a 12 year old GMC with 250k miles on it. his wife gets a new lincoln navigator or ford expedition every 2 or 3 years.
Holy shite, this sound just like my brother but it’s an assortment of sauces and his truck is nearly 15 years old.
I mess with him about being a tight arse. Granted when he and his wife had a kid and got married at 19 he worked his off and would not accept any financial help. I shite you not there were many times he ate Vienna sausages for lunch and supper so he could afford for him, his wife and child everything they needed the first couple of years.
He’s now in his 40s and has been incredibly successful. I consider myself as a bust arse, hard worker that will out work 95% of people but he’s on another level.

When I coached little league I had a 12 year old all star mom approach me very mad that I didn't warn her the all star games costs 3 dollars to get in. I reached to my back pocket to offer her the money (cause I honestly thought she maybe didn't bring any money). That didn't go over well, made it worse. She then went outside the out-field fence and started hollering for her son to come on, "we're going home". The director of baseball had to go and talk her down. Thing is she was probably the only "wealthy" parent we had, all others were middle class. Then I got hit upside the head with a ball thrown in from outfield that I didn't see coming. A bad day.

Not really wealthy, my in-laws most certainly have a couple of million in IRA's, etc. due to good investments over the decades.
The mother in law is oblivious to the family's wealth status, for my father in law is always coy about everything and acts like he doesn't have any money.
So, when they come to visit, my wife insists on paying for their dinners out "because they can't afford it".
Meanwhile, I can assure you that they have at least twice the net worth we do. At least.

I have witnessed a person worth multiple millions use a paper towel in the office and lay it over something on the counter to dry so they can use it again next time. It was funny the first time. It’s not funny every day.
