I don't know where they land in the USNWR rankings, but I think MSU is probably a top 100 research university by any reasonable standard.

#216

When you get outside the top 40 or so the individual major matters much more than the overall number.

While this is a grad school example it shows how important course of study is when ranking schools.

The University of South Carolina is ranked #124 but the MBA program is ranked #55 but the International Business specialty is ranked #1 in the nation.

Mississippi State is a fine college for launching just about any career unless your son wants to be on the Supreme Court.

Toured it with my kid 4 years ago and focused on engineering. They put a lot into their internship requirement with businesses across the south. They gave some decent stats on how many kids go on to be hired by they internship employers.

I recruit tech and engineering out of most of the SEC schools for my company.

State is the best university in Mississippi for that.

Boring town

Good people

Excellent if you have a hefty daughter or want an ag stud in the family

I would still pick an Auburn vet for critters on the farm.

I grew up in Mississippi. I would have gone to Ole Miss or USM before State.

I went to Bama instead. Ole miss would have been a close second. Ironically it was much further from "home" than Ole Miss.

I’ve worked in Agriculture for 15 years. I know a lot of very smart and successful State grads. They definitely form a good network while at school. Starkville is not the worst college town and getting better.

As an added bonus I’ve heard they got some of the better public turkey hunting in the south near campus.

Noxubee wildlife refuge. One of my roommates in school used to get up and go over and hunt for a few hours before his morning forestry classes.

I have an elective recommendation for any student at MSU. 1114 Physical Geography w/Lab. It’s a freshman meteorology course that is not hard but very interesting. It’s a toe dip into the meteorology curriculum. One of the better uses of an elective, with material you will actually use and remember, on campus. Lab is ran by the GA’s.

Take any outsider’s opinion of Starkville and MSU and it’s always going to be a lot better after they visit. Message board idiocy and people trying to compensate for shortcomings is why people down MSU.

When I was at State, an idiot could get into ole mess with a 14 on the ACT.

Ole Miss is much more highly ranked than State currently. Miss St. is towards the bottom of the SEC along with Arkansas these days.

All of this, the Broadcast Meteorology program is the best in the nation. Forestry is top three best in the nation. Ag is up there etc etc etc. Smaller school, hometown type of feel to it. Plenty of things to do if you like the outdoors.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss complement each other quite well. State is great for agriculture, engineering, tech, and other niche sciences that aren't offered at some similar schools (meteorology, aerospace, etc). Ole Miss is great for law, medicine, and accounting (our accounting school is one of the best in the country). You can study just about anything in the state of Mississippi depending on what school you go to and get a good-to-great degree.

Loved State. I have two undergrads one at State in Geology and one at LSU in Civil Engineering. I have no real experience with "college life" at LSU because it was after I got a regular job.

Very similar feel with LSU being more "city-like". I hate Ole Miss doubly.

I visited Starkville for the first time in 2021. I really enjoyed it. It’s a clean small true college town. Campus is nice. Very little riff raff hanging around town. Vast majority are normal clean cut and friendly people. You can tell most of their student body comes from rural working class families from rural MS. Not a lot of the entitled rich prick kids like you see at Ole Miss. I’ve never met a State fan that I didn’t like.

Depending on what your kids are interested in studying, it would be a solid choice. MSU is excellent in engineering, tech & science, Ag & Forestry, and a great Vet school. You won’t have to worry about it being unsafe which is a top priority to me. They’ll get the SEC experience and if they grew up as LSU fans you can totally get away with still being an LSU fan while attending MSU.

The only drawback is location. It’s just a little hard to get to. Starkville is in the middle of no where. You’re sort of on an island and it can make it difficult for quick weekend trips for you or your kids.

All and all out of every SEC school, I’d certainly recommend my kids going to MSU. The value you get for what you pay is solid. Safe, affordable, friendly, plenty of fun to be had but less distractions and quality education.

State is probably a lot of people’s second favorite SEC school if they had to pick a #2.
