I think the term is “suitcase college”.

People go to classes during the week and head elsewhere for the weekend. I know Southern Miss is in that boat because the “Hub City” is so close to so many different areas where students come from.

Starkville has a Mayberry feel to it. You can walk from campus to the Main St. area with decent small town bars and restaurants.

I'll put it to you this way.

Of any college fanbase I regularly bartend/serve tables at where I live, State people never cause any problems.

Salt of the earth people in my experience.

Good school. I would have gone there myself but Ole Miss made me a better offer.

I would be ashamed if that’s the only college option

But if they are choosing it that’s a little different

My daughter chose LSU over State/Ole Miss. She always wanted to go to LSU. So she buckled down and got a really good out of state scholarship. But most of her close friends go to State (a lot of great smart kids)and she loves visiting for games. She has mentioned it being her second choice. Ole Miss was never in the running.
I'm proud of her for making the decision she did. I’ve noticed a lot of kids are too scared to leave their friends and go to a school they know hardly no one. Even it’s a better fit academically.

When my daughter chose to attend MSU, I was not happy. To my surprise, she made a very wise decision. She is getting a good education, is having a good time and thriving. As a parent I couldn’t ask for more.
While it’s not as cosmopolitan as Oxford with all the dumb rich kids that couldn’t get into UGA, UT, UF etc., Starkville is a neat little town filled mostly with good people. Starkville and the surrounding area, called the Golden Triangle, has become a hot bed of economic growth for MS due to the work force spun out from MSU. The president, Mark Keenan is a salt of the earth guy who will do his damndest to keep MSU from becoming a progressive bell hole. I know multi-generational OM families that proudly send their children to State because of Mark Keenum.

Edit: I misspoke a little bit: OM families don’t necessarily send their kids to state because of Mark Keenan, but they don’t protest the decision bc he is there.

The facts were presented to him and he saw it was an ole miss fan he couldn’t resist the urge to pull the cowbell out of his arse and clang

I'm way late to this party, but I'll say that State is a fine university in most respects. Their architecture and landscape architecture schools are top notch. Agriculture, of course, is an area they're extremely well known for.

Starkville is also pretty safe for a college town. Not a whole lot of violent crime there.

I'm an LSU grad (1991) and if I had kids I would not send them to LSU due to the dive Baton Rouge has taken since my days as a student there. I would not hesitate, however, to send them to Mississippi State for a good education in a much safer environment.

ETA: One of LSU's finest and most renowned presidents, General Troy H. Middleton, was a graduate of Mississippi State. There are obviously some noteworthy alumni of that school in Starkvegas.

Not to be negative Nancy, BUT the kids from my youngest daughters class that went there all came back to LSU.
Don’t know why. But from what I can tell from the kids reports, it’s boring.
As a parent that may sound great. As a young adult that sucks.

Now that was a very fortuitous, yet unintentional typo. Props to you for sniffing it out. Hail State!!

I went to State and LSU.

Starkville gets a bad rep but it’s probably the safest city with an SEC university. You rarely hear of violent crime.

Mississippi State has a Presidential library, only State and A&M have those in the SEC. State is like a smaller A&M and the city of Auburn is about 5 years ahead.

You get SEC sports, it’s relatively cheap and they give great scholarship money. If you consider ROI, they are hard to beat.

Their president, Mark Keenum is a State grad that was high in the Bush administration. Mississippi State is the third most conservative Power 5 school behind Baylor and BYU. Doesn’t mean you get zero woke, but it’s really discouraged from the top.

The town is sleepy and boring, but not as bad as some make it feel. What most of my friend do is let their kids live on campus as freshmen, then purchase a condo, get a couple of roommates and when it’s sold in three years, they break even on the living expenses or make a little.

18-22 year old kids are going to find trouble if they are looking for it, but it’s a great place to spend your college years.

My Dad used to recruit for his company there(Ethyl). He thought it had a good engineering school and looked for students with a rounded experience.

They have a great meteorology program. Many broadcast meteorologists attended State.

Sorry to bump an old thread but it’s the newest one I could find. Did a quick 2 hour tour of the campus today and I was impressed. My older boy is figuring out where he wants to go. I hate to say it but I would rather him go to MSU (than LSU) at this point because of the surrounding city. The little bit of Starkville I was able to see looked fine. Laid back college town with not a ton of partying vibe. It’s about a 4.5 hour drive from my house.

As an added bonus I’ve heard they got some of the better public turkey hunting in the south near campus.

Auburn alum, but my son graduated from MSU in Forestry. OOS tuition was terrible but it's a great program and he's done very well since graduation. Wildlife Sciences is top notch too - one of the best programs in the southeast for over 30 years.

I'd definitely send another there if they wanted to go.
