Not necessarily a blunder but I got stumped in an interview one time.

One of my key references (a former supervisor) had also applied for the job.

When the CEO mentioned that he had never seen that and asked me what I thought, I hesitated and said it must be a good opportunity.

A young man turned in a job app with his skills/other section proudly boasting of his ability to analize problems.

A few:

Applicant 1 - told me in the interview that as long as she takes her pills, she won't be a problem.

Applicants 2-10: all responded to an ad which said 3-5 years legal experience REQUIRED:
- none had legal experience; but some of the following competitive advantages: Uber drivers, equestrian team, preschool teacher, bouncer, hospice care, and a ridiculous amount of medical billing people who hated their jobs.

I had a guy come in to apply for a job wearing a shirt that said "frick you, you fricking frick."

When I called him out, he took it off and flipped it inside out.

No need to issue him a knowledge test.

I was interviewing a guy, and asked him to tell me about himself.

He started off with "I was born at..."

That question took an hour as he went through his life story. I cut him off at an hour and thanked him for coming.

Next day, the guy calls demanding to know when he's starting and what his salary will be.

Or what is the best job application experience or story that you have had or heard about?

I worked for Company A for 5 years, then Company B for about 10 months.

A position opened up and I put in an application.

During a screener interview, I realized I'd make a mistake: I had botched my application and switched Company A (former employer) and Company B (current employer) -- so it looked like I had 5 years of experience with my current employer, when I did not.

I realized this about 5 minutes after extolling how "detail oriented" I was.

Really like this thread.

I had a staffing agency basically begging me to take my Masters off my resume so they could place me in some shitty data entry job or something.

Vandy grad was an hour late to the interview because she didn’t realize Knoxville was eastern. Passed on rescheduling.

One that might have been a blunder (but wasn't) was many years ago when my company at the time was looking for people who could code document search terms. The experience looked quite good for someone at this pay level, quite honestly my first reaction was to wonder why this guy was wasting his time trying to get this position.

But we noticed his most recent job had ended two years earlier. So we called him in for an interview and one of the first questions was to ask him what he'd been doing during that time.

His answer? He took a deep breath and admitted that he'd been in psychiatric care for extreme depression and anxiety, but was on medication that was working and was trying to put his life back together.

We appreciated his honesty, and given the nature of the position gave him an offer anyway. Fortunately for him he had another (better) competing offer anyway, hope things worked out for him.

Not an application blunder...but an interview blunder that leaves one scratching one's head. A young man came in to be interviewed for a maintenance job and while we were interviewing him his cell phone rang. You could imagine the looks on our faces when the young man looked at us and said,
"I gotta take this" and he proceeded to converse with the caller. Needless to say, the young man did not get the job.
Matter of fact, the interview was discontinued there.

President of our agency likes to sit in on interviews sometimes and I kid you not all he does is look them up on Twitter or Facebook and just start reading what they post. If he finds anything questionable he prints it and asks them about it.

Needless to say the people’s reaction is always a mix of fear and a look like theyre about to puke

Still waiting for someone to just own it and say they were trying to be funny or something.

With industrial contract workers you'd be surprised how often this actually happens.

It's not only contract workers.

My grandfather is a STRONG Christian in a very conservative denomination, and is one of the most conservative men you will ever meet.

But he employed a guy for over 40 years at 2 different businesses, who couldn't stand up straight without a handle of whiskey in him. There are functioning alcoholics, but this dude was on another level. He drank more alcohol than anyone I've ever heard of, and rarely missed work.

But he was 1 of the 2 best damn workers my grandfather ever had.

I ask this because I think I may have recently seen the most unfortunate spelling error ever on a job application form.

Wife had the word "Public" without the L

She still got hired, but the HR recruiter gave her a hard time about it
