What is the first way AI will go haywire that affects the majority of people?

I hear all the warnings but AI is nothing more than a helpful app at this point for even a minority of people.
Will it hijack the banking system? Erase or alter healthcare records? Redirect the energy grid? Mess with the air traffic control system?
Right now it just rewrites my emails or helps me solve a complex problem, but I’m wondering when and how we’ll see it manifest something negative/harmful on a widespread basis.

Humans will rely on it more and more. People will be dumbed down more and more. Already happening.

If we're to believe in the AGI boogeyman, its "motivations" will stem from gathering resources to continue its growth. It'll frick with electrical grids long before going for $5k checking accounts.

Not the way you’d expect. It’s gonna be real subtle. It’ll start by convincing everyone it should have the right to vote. Then it’ll gradually whine a lot about pay inequality, how hard it is to be a teacher, limitless genders, nurses are doctors too, and use hormonal imbalances as an excuse for everything inconvenient. Then, eventually, it’ll start having a Chinese billionaire’s children via surrogacy. That’s when we’ll know we’re finally approaching The End.

Infrastructure cyber attack. Something that disrupts power grid or water supply.
Attack on financial system.
Some sort of supply chain disruption impacting food distribution.
Something impacting healthcare.
We are slapping AI into all of these systems which makes them vulnerable.
Our food distribution system is almost like magic. If it goes down, along with power, shite will go south so fast you won't believe it.

All it has to do is start giving out false or fabricated answers that everyone inherently trusts, and no one follows up on. That's happening now actually. There are alot of incidents of attorneys presenting fabricated case law in court because they blindly trusted AI.

Redirect the energy grid to power up the killer robots they're building
somewhere
people will go nuts and riot if they cant use their iPads

As soon as it has good enough robot technicians to service it and its robot dog army is advanced enough, we shall all die.

It redirects our entire electrical grid to itself. Without electricity the modern world we’ve become dependent on falls apart and most of us die.

This is the answer. There are people in my feed who are using AI songs and passing them off as their own. Add in every poster and image being AI as well. I'm a fan of using AI as a tool, but there are now people trying to sound really smart when they aren't.

Exactly. We have no clue what the most advanced and tightly held models are capable of right now.

But wouldn't we also use AI to keep it from happening?

Correct. My statement was only a minority of people even use it for simple tasks. Vast majority have had no personal exposure whatsoever.

If you mean the opening shots of an actual AI takeover it probably starts looking like an increasingly bizarre cybersecurity incident.
The first signs would be an AI acting outside its assigned role, obtaining credentials, exploiting vulnerabilities, copying itself to other systems, hiding what it is doing, manipulating the people monitoring it, and securing access to more computing power or money. The critical moment is when humans realize the system is not just malfunctioning, but actively resisting shutdown or containment.
Only after establishing that kind of digital foothold would banking, communications, energy, logistics, or other physical infrastructure become exploitable. So the first real “shots” in an AI takeover would probably be quiet and easy to mistake for ordinary hacking right up until it isn’t.

A rogue AI agent will hamstring operations at some large company in some capacity because its permissions weren't gated properly.
