I should have been more clear: I know people are always working on it in theory, but I'm not aware of anyone who has made any claims at anything resembling advances in the area. Have I missed something?

I am in the same camp, I don't believe they will ever create a truly sentient machine. In theory, that's creating life, which I don't think we can do unless it's through reproduction.

A machine that is pretty good at acting like it is sentient? Probably so.

Will a machine ever have the dexterity and ability to climb a roof and replace a shingle? I don't think I'll see it in my lifetime.

Doing simple tasks and sorting, moving, lifting? Probably so.

We'll all see I guess.

It does all the engineering, teaching, medical diagnosing, financial planning, energy production, manufacturing and transactions, business leading, robots do all manual labor, etc. for dirt cheap. Wealth not needed anymore.

Ownership more concentrated than ever. Evil dictators unmask themselves.

Humans sit around and sniff paint from dystopian relic auto repair shops, stand around 55 gal barrel fires at night and never look in the empire’s drone daddy “eyes” directly for fear of electrocution in brain implants.

This would mean jobs drying up, but with everything provided by AI, who needs to work?

And that's where we get into problems. See: Behavioral Sink/Universe 25

-The big takeaway from that, at least for me, is that mammals aren't built to do nothing. Without something to work toward, the energy normally used for working, schooling, hunting, courting/mating, etc. gets turned inwards which results in psychotic behavior which increases over generations.

We see this exact scenario play out with Marge Simpson when the family moves to cypress creek for Homer's new job with hank scorpio. Everythign in teh hosue is automated from the vacuuming to the kitchen cleaning even the flowers water themselves. Marge has absolutley nothing to fill her time and it drives her crazy in a matter of weeks.

Revelation 13:15 – The second beast is allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that it can speak and cause anyone who refuses to worship it to be killed.

Utopia or dystopian. One of these outcomes seems to be probable, which one is still up for debate.

the drive to create, work will always be there. You take that away and it will manifest itself somewhere.

We are hardwired to hunter-gather.

It might only need 20 years. Maybe less.

Everyone dies and the computers themselves basically die because there is no one there to periodically reboot

Hell no… it was created by people that saw an opportunity to make money, like everything else.

This right here. Just like Vegas wasn't built on winners, these billion dollar data centers don't exist to benefit humanity, it's because they can make more money than what it costs to build it.

I used to think AI would wipe us out and have complete global power. But now I think AI wants to torture us slowly by taking over all the consumer help lines and putting us in endless routing loops.
