What happened to Subway?

In the 1990s, Subway was a decent sandwich shop and a viable alternative to McDonalds or Burger King (which has also since declined).
When did it start going downhill?
Does anyone associate Subway with “fresh” tasting food (bread or toppings) anymore? They no longer do the V cut, the “sub club stamp promotion was shelved in lieu of cheaper subs, their stores no longer smell like fresh bread, and they no longer have the cool wallpaper with yellow booths.
How do they stay in business now with Jimmy Johns expanding every day?

I can almost smell the fresh bread from this photo from 20-25 years back.
I don’t associate the new stores with anything good. Now they have 30 types of bread, and most of it isn’t made there.

Low margins and $5 footlongs are forced upon the franchisee resulting in poorer service and dirtier shops to make up for the losses. At least that's what I understand. The franchisee has to honor those corporate bargains or face penalties.

Went last week for the first time in ages. I must have hit the jackpot Bc they were in the middle of cooking bread and mine was fresh af.

I love Subway's Italian BMT on herb bread toasted with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, pickled sweet peppers with mayo, honey mustard and vinaigrette.

I'd take subway over Jimmy John's any day.
I get the club and I like my subs toasted. Jimmy John's give me a cold sandwich I can make at home.

Nice.
They used to do what Ms Fields or Jimmy Johns does with the near constant baking. You could smell it if you were walking by the restaurant.
Never notice that anymore. Their new breads suck, and most of their ingredients don’t look or taste fresh anymore.
