re: What do you people have against solar farms?

I bet a lot of people don't like others telling them what to do with their personal land/property but have no problem telling these land owners what to do with theirs
Multiple people have said in this thread already that they are fine with people and businesses doing whatever they want so long as it's their money being used. But the fact that billions upon billions of taxpayer dollars are being thrown at these boondoggles does give us the right to have an opinion.
Or did you just ignore those posts to come in with your edgy take?

99/100 solar farms just get a tax rebate for the asset owner, who's almost always a JV owned by a bank. There's no direct pay subsidy for solar. There are a select few that get grants, and some get DOE backed loans, but its rare.

I’d like to see how solar panels would hold up in a cat 4 hurricane.
Most of them are cat 4 rated. In areas that are hurricane prone a lot of time they use high load modules and 180mph rated racking.

Nuclear power is the answer.
You don't think these same Karens would show up for a nuke reactor going near their house? If you want to see a glorious melt, find a community thats looking at adding a nuclear plant and watch the fireworks. NIMBYs are the biggest reason nuclear facilities can't be built now. Even after the increased subsidies from the IRA, it's still and uphill battle.

Have you seen one? Are you aware of the thousands of birds and animals that will lose their habitat?

There’s a lot of conversation on this board about people’s homeowners insurance rates becoming astronomically high.
Now go look at the insurance costs on a solar farm… it’s damn near the point of being cost prohibitive if it’s not there already. It’s one thing to assess risk of a hurricane, but it’s darn near impossible to assess risk of a hail. One random, pop up strong thunderstorm that produces hail and the whole farm is toast.

It's crazy high. I only deal with residential, and we don't have the concentrated risk of loss that utility scale has and we still pay a fortune even with only using UL61730 panels.

I don't speak in absolutes. I said "lots" as that is the general sentiment I picked up reading the thread and just pointing out the hypocrisy
Didn't know personal property rights were considered "edgy"
And bruh subsidies are not just straight taxpayer cash they are mainly tax credits the same way fossil fuels are subsidize. No development = no tax $ any how.

Try and explain it however you want. This boondoggle is being forced upon, and funded by, the US taxpayer.
quote:
The 60 selections under the $7 billion Solar for All program will provide funds to states, territories, Tribal governments, municipalities, and nonprofits across the country to develop long-lasting solar programs that enable low-income and disadvantaged communities to deploy and benefit from distributed residential solar, lowering energy costs for families, creating good-quality jobs in communities that have been left behind, advancing environmental justice and tackling climate change.
I'll say it again, people hate it because it's too easy an answer. If the govt truly wanted energy independence and energy for all, they'd be pushing nuclear down our throats the same way they're pushing wind and solar.

I don't have to explain it because i know how it works.

$7 billion Solar for All program
Not an only direct grant program and capped at $350MM per year if i remember correctly with the majority of that being loans.
So basically what i said
quote:

ETA to expand on this, whenever the DOE does give out any grant money directly, they own the asset and pay for the servicing. They recoup the money in the same way a developer would. They usually go in as minority investors with a bank in a JV. They collect money from the PPA. Also in the incredibly rare event that the DOE owned 50.1%, they would be precluded from the ITC because they don't pay taxes. Which is why they get a private bank to co-invest.

How much do you know about the nuclear PTC vs wind/solar PTC & ITC?

If anyone wants to see one of these in action, here is a link to the fairly newly completed Elisabeth Solar Farm-

Gee, I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t want that adjacent to their land.

I mean it is just sitting there. My neighbor has used our property line as a dumping ground for all of the used parts that he doesn't use for car flips. I wouldn't mind some panels at all.

I wonder how close the wildfires got to them last year?

NIMBY'S. These people will go along with any agenda as long as it is Not In My Back Yard. They wouldn't give a shite if it was somewhere else as long as they don't have the solar farm next to thier property.
