What do people in Germany think about the D-Day celebrations?

Like this year for the big anniversary. It is interesting to me that this is never discussed.

They still have some number of WW2 veterans still alive, right? Are they ever recognized in any way or do Germany’s laws prohibit that?

I’m sure it’s a sore subject. I do think it’s pretty cool to see German vets meet their former enemies. For the most part, everyone gets along.

They're happy about it. Germans had a reckoning with their past a long time ago and have distanced themselves from it and don't romanticize it. They recognize it for what it is.

Germany isn't really proud of that period in their history.

Yet Angela Merkel has had the nerve in the past to lecture the United States on our past human rights abuses, which are a day at the park compared to her country's.
