re: What do people in Germany think about the D-Day celebrations?

Years ago I met several German vets while traveling in Germany. These were lower ranking regular Wehrmacht soldiers at the time (or at least according to them). One spoke favorably about being an English POW and was simply happy to have survived. They didn't advertise being veterans, but they weren't ashamed for being a regular soldier at age 18. Given how the Americans helped rebuild, and how badly the Soviet Union treated east Germany, they didn't complain with how history unfolded. I didn't meet any hardcore Nazis, though.

I imagine there were many in the Wehrmacht who had no love or particular allegiance to the Nazis but fought for their country nonetheless. It isn't illegal or even politically incorrect to recognize the sacrifices of Soviet soldiers in WWII who fought for an even more brutal regime.

Hopefully they think about how they got their asses kicked by the good guys

From what history book did you read this incorrect tidbit?

This, nor the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy.

They're still in Argentina.

Germans are neither nationalistic nor apologetic for their role in WW2. This is a nation of people who have unchecked immigration to replace their population - their national identity doesn't exist off the football pitch.

I don't think there is any better country at erasing its own past than Germany.

Huh?
Less than 5% of the German population is Muslim.

OK, we paused outside Berlin in a pre-arranged deal with Uncle Joe. Still set the framework for a divided Germany and forward leaning Cold War posture.

Also, it’s not like it’s some huge arse whooping they took. It was bloody for everyone.
It was a huge arse whooping. It came at a high price for the Soviets, but it was a huge arse whooping. It isn't just about deaths but:
Germany had somewhere between 7-7.5 million deaths, both civilian and military, around 10% of their total population.
US lost a little over 400,000.
Of course, most of the meaningful fighting was done by the Soviets - who lost around 20 million people, give or take a few million.
