Germans have very little national pride because of their past. All my German friends explained this to me in the context of their World Cup win a few years back -- it was the first time in their entire lives they were proud to be German.

Anyways, point is that they probably don't think about D-Day, and if they do they probably think it is a good thing to celebrate because they are ashamed of their role in the war.

It’s been almost 30 years since I was stationed in Germany so I can’t say what it’s like today. But I know in the 80s they mostly either ignored it all together or tried to look at it as the war was just them being a few years ahead of NATO in fighting Communism. In fact I remember talking to an old German dude one night who detailed how the Waffen SS was, in his opinion, the precursor to NATO.

Did you see how bad we made Berlin look? Hopefully they clam up and move on with their lives by now

We won.

They lost.

Who cares what they think.

Not directly about D-Day and the current anniversary but here’s an interesting thread about what Germans are taught about WW2 that would give some insight

Thank you for sharing that. So what do you think of people on here who believe the Nazis were socialist?

They still had a centrally planned economy. Same mechanism as socialism. Nazis were known as the National Socialist German Workers' Party and economically left wing

Private ownership was in deed only. Production was controlled by the government. Hitler hated both commies and capitalists.

While the factories were privately owned, they had no autonomy. Here's some good reading if you're actually interested, which I doubt

I'm one of the most left leaning posters on here (which isnt saying much as many of my views are libertarian in nature).

Of course I'm okay reading different perspectives. Matter of fact I'm considering reading a book recently proposed to me that talks about how absolute monarchy is in some ways superior to democratic elections (can't think of the name.)

My issue with the Nazi being socialist argument is that they have too many capitalism qualities (like the IBM and Ford deals). They almost come of as a capitalism-lite in how they conduct business. I can see how that can be downplayed in a controlled economy.

It really is a good read. Thank you for sharing.

Two points I found very interesting

* The comment made about socialist states forcing people into jobs they mostly dont like to reduce labor shortages. While that isn't a good idea, how is it different from what capitalist countries do?

Many people have jobs they don't want to do in capitalist countries varying from unskilled labor to skilled/degree required work. I'm assuming the only real difference is that the Capitalist allows some form of personal choices. In a free market the truth is there will always be a degree of randomness.

The United States in particular has low job satisfaction for a modern Post-industrial country but it's still better than a socialist state. How do you explain this?

* I like the mention of how Nordic nations only use social democracy as a political ideal but not an economic one. They are indeed capitalist, which many on the right and left of US politics dont acknowledge. It is a "hampered market economy".

The US as it stands is also a hampered market economy, just at the mercy of whoever is currently in government PLUS the intervention of lobbyists and market forces. Since their is so much intervention against the will of the people, how do you surmise Anericans deal with it.

It seems like individual liberty is only as effective as corporate entities allow it to be?

Only losers complain about the celebrations that caused them to be losers.

If they didn’t want there to be celebrations celebrating their defeat then they should have tried harder and won.

Germany is probably the most cucked nation on the planet in modern times. Things will come back around with a vengeance unfortunately.

How many veterans can they possibly have alive? I read the other day that of the people who served in our Armed Forces in World War II, only 3% are still alive.

And if there are veterans of the Third Reich, frick em.
