I think they probably should get the Don Draper treatment most of the time.

This moved into the internet era and then every pundit had to have a voice that differentiated them to acquire an audience. The only way to get true differentiation was to move more and more to the far left/right side of an issue. Now we have voices on the fringes making hyperbolic devils advocate arguments and drawing the willing to those fringes like political Pied Pipers.

They’re the worst. People are ruining their lives by becoming consumed with the media piped-in hatred for whichever side you’re not on. Being angry all the time does not mean you’re more informed; it means your priorities are out of whack.

That's what annoys me the most, those who look at it more as a team sport than an intellectual and philosophical endeavor (which is often the type of person who acts like everything revolves around politics). People of that ilk are who have degenerated political discourse to little more than "no, frick you, my team is better!1111", often without having ever sat down to fully understand their "team's" stance on something and the possible (much less probable) ramifications of it.

I avoid them like the plague, just like I try to avoid the 24 hour News Networks. I can get a more honest version on this site vs the other options and by that I mean breaking news, especially before political spins can be put on a story.

Well, most of them seem to congregate on Twitter, so I avoid Twitter.

And it is easy to block people on Facebook.

I loathe those people and do what I can to stay away from them.

Knowing what is going on with the different branches of government in your country is important. Being up-to-speed on current events and proposed legislation is something more of us should aspire to. An ignorant populace is not a good thing.

Now, if you start talking about meme wars and how you owned someone on twitter or Facebook, then...yeah, maybe re-examine your life.

Meh, I enjoy the deep thinkers that are honest with their principles and arguments that follow whether left or right. I have no tolerance for the close minded incurious know-it-alls.

I pay pretty close attention to the major elections and do my best to make an informed decision with my vote. After that, I check out until the next one. I don't really even watch the news.

And, in the meantime, we have the news media slanted in a single direction, working in conjunction with one political party. We have multiple examples of federal departments actively working with a political party to achieve a political result. We have a congress that no longer even tries to limit spending to tax revenue. We have huge abuses in privacy. We have public schooling that operates in an activist mode and pushes its own moral standard on the children. We have a government that is constantly trying to chip away and fundamental rights afforded to the people by the constitution. Etc. Etc. Etc.

We are all guilty of ignoring politics. We've become numb to it. It's very easy to live in a bubble and assume that it doesn't affect us. It's the biggest lie that we've ever told ourselves. And, we're going to pay for it.

Damn that's actually pretty good. It’s also ambiguous enough that you might avoid getting your car keyed.

All of this.

People ignore politics at their own peril. You should understand how your government works. You should understand who represents you. What they do in office has real effects on your life whether you choose to live in ignorant bliss or not. Elections matter.

24/7 at both hospitals where I work the TV in the doctor's lounge is tuned into Fox News.

It blows my mind. Turn that shite off. It's poison.

And I'm not picking on Fox News. The same goes for all of the major news outlets.

I hate political conversations. I went to a dinner party one time, and the host went on and on about politics. I never killed a fifth of whiskey so fast before that night.
