Work 189 days, weekends off, done by 3, summers off, holidays off, cheap insurance, retirement in 25 years and then work in another state for 10 years and draw 2 retirements. My buddy was a coach and made $120,000 for retirement. Took a job in another state and makes $110,000 and works and draws retirement. His wife retired on $75,000 and works at same school as him and makes $75,000. They are killing it right now and at 60 will draw huge sums of money on retirement. He doesn’t even teach a class. They draw about $100,000 in retirement and make $185,000 working.

How do I talk him out of being a teacher?
You can’t, but you can talk to him about options. Maybe you can highlight the benefits of going to industry for a bit and then getting a PhD to be a professor. He’d get to teach and mentor young adults, and the majority of those young adults actually want to be there. I’d recommend trying to steer him to one of the areas that actually have good pay though (college of medicine, college of business, etc.) instead of a liberal arts concentration.

You can make decent enough money if you teach in the right district and have enough degrees. I’m on year 18 on metro ATL with an Ed.d and make 120k. If he wants to go into admin or county office level they are around 150+ in my county and if he’s as smart as you say he is it would be an easy path for him. You Louisiana folks have a very skewed view of what public education can be.

What school does he attend? If it is in Louisiana I probably know his Ag teacher. We are a close knit bunch.

Being off 3 months a year and all holidays with the kids.

Banging all the other teachers

Sounds more like a job for a woman though

Retirement, paid summers, Ag has both the shop / welding and animal components. If he’s skilled like it sounds he can use the holidays to make extra scratch. He also gets to help kids keep the work force going. Which is fulfilling.

Our education system needs teachers who are like him.

Tell him to become a college professor. He can study something related to agriculture like agronomy. Being a college professor is a much better quality of life.

teaching is beneath him

I "teach" nearly every day at work. And none of it involves a 7th grader offering to blow me in front of the entire class like happened during student teaching.

Although, some of you would consider that a perk.
