I was one of those that others were forbidden to hang out with. At a very early age, I was off limits for a lot of the kids parents. I didn’t realize it then but I see it now.

Many are amazed at how I turned out

Yes. I grew up in Sec. 8 housing. Those kids are either dead or in prison. All of my friends who stuck together have gone on to live perfectly normal american lives

How did you make it out rather than become another statistic?

One of my best friend’s was “forbidden” to hang out with me. They thought I was trouble. He became a lifelong petty criminal and drug addict. I did not.

Yep.

Officers responded to the house fire at 1005 Thurmond Street about 11:20 a.m. A man told an officer that the owner of the home had walked up to him and said: "That house is possessed. I poured a gallon of gasoline on it and set it on fire," according to the report.

I was the exact opposite! I played drums in a rock band & had long hair. My 3 good friends were all normal so to speak but little did their parents know that I was the only one that didn't smoke pot and hit acid every chance like their kids did! Always thought that was poetic justice.... Although as an older man now I do enjoy a toke from time to time now!

Mixed bag: a very few are doing really well, most are okay, some are dead, some are still living the shark life and a couple fried their brains like can’t speak right or has Parkinson’s symptoms bad.
It seems like most of the ones that went really wild are stuck at the maturity level they were at when they started going really wild.

Yes. He lived through the woods from us. My mom found out we were meeting in the middle, just playing in the woods like normal 12 year olds. Moms was concerned that I would get in trouble with him, just like our older brothers did before. We never hung out after that. Dude's dad was an abuser. I saw him the summer he graduated, I could tell he was emotionally burned out. He told me he was gonna do something with himself. The next week he joined the Marines. I saw him 6 months later while he was on leave and I could tell he was better for leaving. He was KIA a few months later in Iraq. There's a memorial for him about 100 yards away where he told me he was going to do something with himself. I still wonder what might've been different for him if he'd had a friends house to go to within walking distance when we were 12.

Yes, my mom thought Bill Gates and Paul Allen were a couple of stoners who would lead me to gateway drugs. One of them is now dead so I guess she was right.

Yep. Was a good friend during school but parents never allowed me to go hang out with him outside of school. Ended up becoming a drug addict and screwed his life up but man he was a lot of fun to cut up with at school. Definitely a bad influence though

Uh yeah one in particular in the 5 th grade… by the 6th grade he was in juvenile detention for stealing guns from a house, I’m not sure how he’s doing now but I looked him up on face book a few years ago he’s living in Arkansas now … probably about as good as you’d expect from a kid like that…his mom was buying him cigarettes in the 5th grade so yeah.

But a lot of the kids I grew up with in that part of town are dead or no where to be found.

Never specifically forbidden, but they were concerned with quite a few I used to skate with. They were dead on the money about a lot of them. They turned out not so great, but none are in jail or anything serious. Just no ambition and rudderless...consistent with how they were raised. :(

My parents were 1 for 1 in this scenario. The guy knocked up a girl at 17, got emancipated from minor status, dropped out of school, knocked up a different girl with pink hair, and now looks like a meth head
