I think most posters here would agree that 1989-2001 was peak Americana even though there was a Bush and Clinton as President.

This country started to go down with Monica Lewinsky.

I agree. I didn't like Clinton, but I really think what the republicans did to him over that started the ridiculous division we see now. The dims impeaching Trump over made up shite is just next level Lewinsky stuff. The pendulum keeps swinging further away each time. I hate to think what they'll do when they take back control.

I tell my kids all the time that it will never get better than the 80s and 90s. Just awesome.

I wish we could reset technology back 50 years.

You know what was also very popular in that time frame? Ska. I'm not saying ska made us great, but I am saying the world these days could use a little bit more guitar on the upbeat.

Yes. Now we have brainwashed idiots actively supporting Russia and confirmed enemies of our country.

Each time I read the growing list of travel banned countries, I look for Russia. I never find it.

We peaked during the Reagan years when the Berlin wall came down and we won the cold war. After that the USA and Europe crossed the line toward socialism and open boarders which began our downfall.

An argument can be made that the decline started when Eisenhower left office and he warned the country about the military industrial complex. Remember, Eisenhower was in a unique position as the supreme commander during WW 2 and then president of the USA. Kennedy started to dismantle the military industrial complex and we see what happened to him. Eisenhower's warning will be looked back in history as the beginning of the fall of the USA in line with Rome and other counties who concentrate on military expense to rule the world..

I think we were better off having the USSR existing to keep us competitive. China is not a direct competitor like USSR was.

I believe that historians will eventually recognize the period 1989 to 2001 as a pinnacle of American influence, power and superiority.

That era was certainly the last years American leaders were the protectors of America and American citizens.

Pretty much everything after that was about American leaders enriching themselves and their families at the expense of America and Americans citizens.

That’s about the time grunge rock and gangsta rap went national. I have barely found music worth listening to since then.

from about 85 up until 9/20/2001 was peak America. but late 90s was really peak. Had the tech boom and the economy overall was rolling. Nafta has been signed but hadnt fricked everything up yet

could still go to mexico safely to go fishing or vacation at the beaches.

really truely 9/11 was an inflection point for the US
