Same here, gas prices, egg prices, Covid shutdowns, never had an effect on what I’m doing.

A little more that some might missed. Between 2020 and 2026, 11 major U.S. oil refineries permanently closed or stopped refining crude oil. Not temporarily shut down. Permanently gone. The combined capacity lost is approximately 1.72 million barrels per day gross, roughly 900,000 barrels per day net after accounting for some expansions at remaining facilities.

Here you go! Marathon Petroleum, Valero Energy, and Phillips 66 collectively earned $12.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026 alone. Their highest combined quarterly result since 2022. Their stock prices are surging. Forbes reported in July that refining stocks have hit record highs.

Marathon is the company that permanently closed its Martinez, California and Gallup, New Mexico refineries during COVID.

Isn't this a renewable diesel refinery now?

it is not an oil supply issue, it's a global refining capacity issue. Russia diesel and distillate supply taken offline by Ukraine has incentivized the US to produce/export more diesel driving up our prices.
If we embargo diesel exports, that will just repeat the problems that happened in the 1970s with soybean and grain exports (Japan and China shifting investments to Brazil and Argentina for a couple generations).
If we embargo exports of diesel we will have to reduce run rates of refineries in the US to 88-92% (currently at 96.8%) meaning even less gasoline will be produced for domestic use all the while giving up any possibility of Europe relying on US supply for a few generations because they will simply shift investment to other regions (i.e. middle east) for future supply guarantees. Ukraine is the source of our global energy issues, not the Strait of Hormuz and not even the price of oil.

Why in the shite are these our only two options? We have to do something about this. Non-partisan primaries and/or ranked-choice voting could help some. Maybe not a silver bullet, but one would expect things to moderate over time.
