So the majority of the population speaks fluently at least 5 languages. That is impressive. Americans have little reason to learn another language. America is a huge country with a lot of geographical diversity. We're not a tiny country surrounded by other tiny countries who speak totally different languages. At best there is a smattering of folks in Canada who speak primarily French. Mexico is obviously Spanish speaking, but again, the average American has very little reason to ever travel to Mexico.

Major wars every couple decades for the last three centuries force language acquisition so that governments know what other countries are up to.

To see girls in oversized t shirts and shorts?

I will stand by my statement. A night out in the south has the girls dressed far less done up with makeup and slutty clothing than does a night out in Britain/Ireland

Plus, if New York, New Hampshire, Delaware, and New Jersey all had a different language, those people would probably be fluent in a couple of languages as well

Right and they also don’t have a fricking McDonald’s on every block. Americans are pigs. Also they ban a lot of preservatives we use here. We haven’t done that yet because it’s about money. The more chemicals and shot you put in food the cheaper it is. And fat tub Americans buy it.

They do have those types of places, way bigger than the ones we have here. Its like i said, high fructose corn syrup. It lowers your energy and makes you more hungry.

Im always so happy when I land back into the states. Ill chug a soda.

Eh, depends on where you go.

Amsterdam had a shite ton of them. Difference is more portion control and the actual quality of the food.

Take a walk from Cantillon brewery to the Grand Place in Brussels and you'll change your mind in a hurry.

You aint kidding. Getting off the train heading to our AirBnB through that shite was a little unnerving and I normally DGAF about that type stuff.

Oslo had a ridiculous number of TGI Fridays of all places. And they were all jam packed anytime we crossed one.

They eat differently for one. Their big meal is in the middle of the day and ours is at the end of the day....that has to have some sort of effect. Also, in France, particularly, they really don't drink milk the way we do. Basically they stop allowing their kids to drink cow or goats milk after age 7...they might use milk or cream in sauces, but nit so much to drink, and in the cities they walk more even if they are using public transport

I traveled to southern France around two years ago and felt similar when it came to portion size and walking. I didn't have snacks, processed food, readily available to me everywhere. Also when we sat down for lunch/dinner I noticed the food was served in courses and the portion sizes were smaller. You consume less food overall but in a longer time frame

My experience also. I lost about 10 lbs when I spent 6 weeks in France. Chicks in Europe are hot Bc they’re thin.

The Swiss and Germany consume literally twice as much chocolate as the US.

And their chocolate, along with most desserts, have far, far less sugar than here in the US. And that's not even discussing all the processed HFCS shite we call "desserts" in this country.

To this day I cannot stand cake frosting, most cake, etc. here in the US because I grew up eating my German grandmother's baked goods.

Ice... good luck with that. If you manage to get a drink with ice, it’s like 2 cubes.

You can't have different cultures clash if there is only one culture.

It's not hard.

I was in Amsterdam last summer. The locals tell me if you see someone smoking, its probably someone from another country...

If I remember correctly, they let their teenagers drink alcohol at 14 but you cannot get a drivers license until you are 20. They think we are crazy to let our teenagers drive...

Yep. If you make a big deal about it and explain that you want a lot of "extra" ice, you might get three cubes.

You have to ask for ice water or they will just bring a tiny class of room temperature water to your table.

I used to live in Germany and always got strange looks when I specifically asked for Leitungswasser (tap water) instead of a bottle of mineral/sparkling water.

And you're right about the ice. I remember two Americans checking into a hostel I was staying in in Stuttgart and them asking the front desk where the ice machine was. The girl pointed to a little ice cream freezer in the lobby (the German word for ice cream is just "Eis"). I explained to her that they were looking for Eiswuerfel or ice cubes, and she just chuckled.

Stilles wasser was what we called it but it might be regional.
