Stilles wasser was what we called it but it might be regional.

Could be? I lived in Tuebingen for school. The motto of Baden Wuerttemberg (the state Tuebingen is in) is "BW: Wir koennen alles - ausser Hochdeusch".

As far as the water, sometimes when I asked for still water they'd just bring me a bottled water without carbonation. So I'd specifically ask for tap water. This was rare though, I usually just ordered a beer.

And you're right about the ice. I remember two Americans checking into a hostel I was staying in in Stuttgart and them asking the front desk where the ice machine was. The girl pointed to a little ice cream freezer in the lobby (the German word for ice cream is just "Eis"). I explained to her that they were looking for Eiswuerfel or ice cubes, and she just chuckled

Yeah but I will say outside of Greece and Italy, most of Europe its not hot for very long. I thought it was crazy to drink beer at room temperature, but I've had plenty of British Cask ale's which is straight from a keg literally sitting on the bar and its perfectly fine if its normal British weather which is not super hot.

Also, its fairly laughable to not understand how much more Europeans walk than Americans. Almost everything is walkable for them. They live in much tighter quarters with almost everything being centralized. You can fairly easily live even in small towns without a car as long as you don't need it for work. I bet Europeans walk on average 10 miles more than Americans PER WEEK. Maybe more. That 500 miles a year on average more, is the weight difference.
