I would say watch a bunch of Youtube videos of the people that do this. I have watched a ton of them and its got its good points and bad points. I have considered doing this some when I retire. I could never do it full time, but a few months out of the year would be interesting.

Been a long time since I have heard Eglin and Club Fed used in the same sentence.
That facility was closed many years ago.... but it did hold some famous folks and provided a stable for lonely spouses of deployed/TDY USAF personnel (if rumors were to be believed)

I do some work with a guy who was the drummer for and founded a band called Pablo Cruise. Before my time, but apparently he was good friends with jimmy buffet. He licenses different software, mostly training stuff.
Anyway, he’s married and still drives around in a souped up jeep, pulling a trailer, and bought a starlink so he can still work. Spends his time mostly on the road.

I bought an suv i want to make an overlander but I'm boogie so I'll get a travel trailer to pull. I can't even do a nice class b. I can't stand a cassette toilet or a wet bath.

OP - I’d rent a campervan from Outdoorsy or similar and do a 2-3 week trip first. Work out the kinks, see what you like/need from that specific vehicle.
You’ll also meet people along the way and get good ideas from them. If you’re going to work and be out west Starlink is a must.
I did a 2 week trip in Colorado last summer. Primarily boondocking. Learned a lot if we decide to take a longer trip.

Man, do you really want to have to carry your shaving kit to the bathroom in truck stops or campgrounds every 3rd day when you get to take a shower?

Good ideas. And I agree that I would probably do a trial run of 2 - 3 weeks to get my feet wet, before committing real significant money. The camper van idea is probably good. Like you I want to use it to do a fair amount of boondocking. I might use a campground here and there, but I really want to go in somewhat isolated areas off grid.

You have nothing holding you back. If you want to do it then that’s your call. My only recommendation would be rent one at first if possible? Maybe borrow someone’s? So you could try it out for at least a few weekends.

Not a van. I plan on being more comfortable in 4 season Truck camper being hauled with a flatbed dually w/built in storage and hauling a boat or a waverunner. Like this:

Exactly why I want a 4 season Truck camper. I’ve had one before. There’s a lot more space. Ceiling is 6’7”, has a queen bed, dry bath, AC/heater, decent size kitchen (although I cooked outside a lot), table seating for 4 but I’ll only be 2 max.
I can drop the camper and be more mobile if I want to explore in a city. I can go anywhere a van can go fully loaded plus haul a lot more weight, but my overall comfort level is greater.
I’m also a lot more nimble than a RV and can go places an RV can’t and launching a boat/waverunner is easy.
