Federal authorities arrested and charged a U.S. special forces soldier who is accused of using classified information about the raid that removed Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro from office to make prediction market bets.

The soldier was identified as Gannon Ken Van Dyke in a news release announcing the indictment.

Van Dyke “bet a total of approximately $33,034” on the Maduro operation on the prediction market platform Polymarket, federal authorities said. He ultimately made more than $409,000 as a result of the bets placed on the U.S. operation, an unsealed indictment alleges.

Authorities said he “participated in the planning and execution of the U.S. military operation to capture Nicolás Maduro.”

“In total, Van Dyke made approximately 13 bets from Dec. 27, 2025, through the evening of Jan. 26,” the Justice Department said.

“Our men and women in uniform are trusted with classified information in order to accomplish their mission as safely and effectively as possible,” said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, “and are prohibited from using this highly sensitive information for personal financial gain.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said the indictment “makes clear no one is above the law, and this FBI will do whatever it takes to defend the homeland and safeguard our nation’s secrets.”

"Following his successful trading relating to Maduro- and Venezuela-related contracts, Van Dyke allegedly sent most of his proceeds to a foreign cryptocurrency vault before depositing them into a newly created online brokerage account," the Justice Department said.

"The same day of the operation, Van Dyke withdrew the majority of his allegedly unlawful proceeds from his Polymarket account," the DOJ added.

Federal authorities say that on Jan. 6, three days after the Maudro raid, Van Dyke “asked Polymarket to delete his Polymarket account, falsely claiming that he had lost access to the email address.”

Good job prosecuting the guy who probably took a shot with his life savings.

The multi millionaires in Congress applaud you.

Hey, if congress can do it, why can't soldiers? It's not like he bet against his team and then threw the game.

Im sorry but I am ok with what this guy did. he took his shot and made some money. He didn't reveal any secrets he didn't disclose anything. No part of the mission was compromised. Congress and other leaders constantly reveal secrets and walk away this poor schmuck is facing 60 years? GTFOH

He traded on non-public government information.

Man, frick that. That dude bet on himself and his team for a mission and hat was nowhere near a guarantee. That dude should get to keep every cent tax free. If I’m Trump, I’m giving this dude and immediate pardon.

Anna Paulina Luna was in Newsmax last night acknowledging congress does it and because of that-- though she thinks the soldier was wrong-- she was going to push for him to be pardoned and possibly returned to his unit (minus the money of course)... curious to see if anything comes of that.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Is it technically wrong and illegal. But this guy is a freaking grunt just trying to make some money for his future. Congress members do this shite everyday. It is well known that drunkass Nancy Pelosi bought all kinds of medical stocks the day before the covid lockdowns and mask mandates.

U.S. govt should put $33k for every soldier on the mission to do the same.

Now, every member of Congress and other parts of US govt who does the same (eg, through the quiet channels to/for their family & friends) should feel humongous hypocrisy. And this includes all in Executive Branch, to the big guy too.

SF guy who likely risked life is found and a fall guy, who’s life at risk during mission. All the others behind scary desks.

If no one is above the law, prove it.

Fully aligned with your sentiment.

However, like those who track pizza orders and hours of day/night at Pentagon to predict worldwide military action, you can bet (pun) polymarket watch of SF activity is now in play (or is now revealed).

But when the stock market makes massive moves hours before Trump posts or signs an executive order, no repercussions even though the paper trail is probably a mile long.

Executive staffers, congress, etc. stock trading with inside/classified information? Nothing to see here.

But use it to beat the house when gambling? Straight to jail.

He used classified information trading a commodity. Similar to insider trading on stocks.

I would rather our soldiers get to do this (as long as they are betting on our winning, not against) than Congressional leaches doing it.

We know both are wrong but if Congress is going to allow itself to get away with it, we should be fine with our soldiers following their example because we keep re-electing the same people who keep doing the same thing.

The day people wake up and unite over the fact that these idiots are on the same team, maybe real change will happen.

They need to make an explicit law then let him off. My only issue is that he was displaying early information of one of the greatest covert operations of all time. And it could have gotten a ton of soldiers killed. A good intelligence service could have noticed and would have been on high alert. They show up to the compound and the choppers get rpged or something. I am assuming he did it before hand and not after (but before it was publically known).
And yes, the congress people/ executive branch should be punished for insider trading too, or atleast a hardline where it no longer happens after a certain date (both pipe dreams but still).

I'm not ok with it but if we're not going to prosecute insider trading in other parts of the government then this guy shouldn't be prosecuted.
