US Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Secretary of Defense Mark Esper are said to be open to holding a "bipartisan conversation" about renaming nearly a dozen major bases and installations that bear the names of Confederate military commanders, according to an Army official.
The official said that though McCarthy believes he has the potential authority to unilaterally rename the installations, there would need to be consultation with the White House, Congress and state and local governments.

I'll never understand the obsession with the CSA. I've lived in the south my entire life and I've never felt any connection with the confederates.

We should name them for birds, reptiles, or mammals.
Very safe choice: Wren Way. Bok Boulevard. Alligator Alley (wuh?)

I've always felt some post names were subtle trolls of the Confederates. For example Hood and Bragg were both terrible generals.

Not high on the list because Most probably think it's named after the President. Fort Lee on the other hand...

They were basically the equivalent of what country club Republicans are now, spewing ridiculous crap about "jobs Americans won't do" and horror stories about even the most basic forms of business regulation.

Sort of makes sense I guess. We don't like people who are captured and are POW's so monuments to losers is kind of soft anyway.

Hood was not a terrible General. Whenever Jackson needed someone to go headlong into the enemy he chose Hood’s Texans.
Bragg was a terrible field officer as was Beauregard but both were brilliant administrators.

The obsession some people in the south have with a bunch of people who fought to keep slaves is pretty weird

We are far enough removed now from the World Wars that it would make sense to rename some things after heroes of those wars, or even Korea or Vietnam. In the grand scheme of things all that changes is which group of people will have hurt feelings.
