It’s also worth mentioning, a number of the southern National Guard units trace their lineage back to Confederate units.

So popular that the civilian population of the South folded like a lawn chair once Northern Armies started occupying Southern cities. Their powerful sense of nationalism was limited to giving Northern troops the stink eye as they went about their daily business. Meanwhile their sons were dying by the thousands for a lost cause.

If I look at my family, the war left deep wounds, they never really recovered. The best men died, and the ones who survived came home to economic ruin.
