Whenever I feel it necessary to say a few words in defense of the south to my non-southern friends, I always mention that while there are a lot of bitter Lost Causers, there are also a shitload of natives who laugh their asses off at those people

That's another great argument Confederacy apologists love to trot out. "Um well you know slavery was on its way out anyway so what's another 20 or 30 years of a race of people being enslaved?" The next argument is, "Well a lot of slave owners didn't treat their slaves that bad."

Most Americans alive today dont have ancestry dating back to the Antebellum period. Most came into the US after the Civil War.

The war would not have happened without slavery. They fought for their way of life, which was an economy based on free labor and chattel slavery.
You are being intentionally obtuse if you think anybody with a lick of sense would fall for this old “state’s rights” parlor trick that ashamed southerners try to pull.

This argument is flawed because they never considered how the Planter class would "reinvent" slavery.

My great-great-great grandfather served in the 14th Alabama from 1862-65. He was present at the Battle of Gettysburg, fighting on the southern edge of Cemetery Ridge on July 2 and participating (albeit minimally) in Pickett's Charge on July 3.

Because legacies are generally passed down from generation to generation, your not understanding the obsession is likely a part of not receiving that part of the family lore for whatever reason.

No because it is illegal, but from several years living there, some wear it on their heart but many more the Iron Cross for their loved ones and ancestors who they believe fought for their country not the political party.

The South was conquered militarily by the North. What other Americans can say that? Hawaiians and Native Americans? All 3 of these groups, still today, have large segments that lionize their pre-conquered cultures.

Just did a little research and looks like my great great great grandfather and uncle may have fought. Its interesting from a historical standpoint, but it doesn't make me want to honor them. I don't hate them for it either.
They were simple country folk, but the government of the CSA were traitors, no doubt about it. And they betrayed their country for reprehensible reasons.

Good. They are the main reason we still struggle today. No reason why this wasn't done in 1867.
