'They Always Had Some Drama': Friends Reflect on Romance Between Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie
"There was always something below the surface where things weren't 100% wonderful," says Laundrie's friend, Ben Matula
quote:
On the surface, Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie seemed as perfectly-matched as any two people could be. But friends who spoke with PEOPLE say there was often tension between the couple, who'd dated since high school.
"One minute, they'd be all over each other, the next minute, he'd be like, 'We're fighting,'" says Laundrie's friend, Ben Matula, describing their relationship when they were teenagers in Long Island, New York. "They always had some drama."
Matula, who spoke to PEOPLE exclusively for this week's issue, adds: "There was always something below the surface where things weren't 100% wonderful."
quote:
Alyssa Chen, 23, said her vlogger friend Gabby's on-again, off-again relationship with Laundrie had many ups and downs.
"They had times they were toxic and times where everything seemed a lot more healthy," Chen tells PEOPLE. "They had very low lows and very high highs. But they really seemed to love each other. When things were good, you'd be like, 'Why can't I have a relationship like that?' When they were bad, you'd be like 'Oh my God, just break up and spare yourself from the drama and everyone else from having to hear about it.' "
quote:
Matula says the tragedy of their road trip has made him reflect upon what he thought he knew about the couple.
"The guy who he's being made out to be isn't the guy I knew," Matula insists. "But then I have to look at what's going on and realize that he did some stuff that seems like it was shady — seems like maybe he wasn't on the up and up. And because he did that stuff, a girl might be dead and he might be in trouble.
quote:
"It seemed like they were seeing the world with the person they loved," Matula says. "They were living the dream that all of us want to do. But they were doing it. All their friends were either still in college or searching for entry level jobs, and they're out there killing it. I was jealous, and I know I'm not the only one. I was happy for them."
quote:
"She's so artistic. She's an amazing artist. She loves to draw," he said. "She has a great eye with decorating … She's that flower child type of personality. The old soul, you know?"
"If Woodstock was still going on, she'd still be there, man," Joseph added. "She's a hippie from the '60s, all right? She's a Beatles fan, round glasses … a free spirit."

Probably left his sandals outside the van so they could dry. I mean he may have just walked across that creek with her or her body.

Why should we? They knew the score when they left Haiti to come here illegally

They were specifically told "By invitation only."

BL parents helped him escape. Aiding and abetting. There's no way he's out running the FBI. He's not in FL.

This is a pretty retarded take.
Are there award-winning TV shows about illegals crossing the border?
No.
All you have to do is look at the umpteen years that Law and Order and its spinoffs have been an award wnning series and hugely popular.
Are all the victims of all the crimes that happen on L&O, L&O SVU, and L&O CI always white people? Of course not.
With many people, the same thing that spurs people's interest in this case is the same thing that causes people to tune into those shows every day and night Whatever the reason, it has nothing to do with race. Many people are fascinated with true crime stories.

Now back to the topic at hand. Brian really seems like a pampered son. One that has been spoiled, catered to, and down right babied. He was doing, " morning yoga", for Christ sake. He refused to drink out of plastic bottles, could not handle his emotions. He probably flew back to his parents in August to cry a little and get money from mom and pops. When adversity arose, he did not have the fortitude to deal with it. He killed Gabby, took a shower a few miles away, came back to the van, and hauled arse back to mom and pop. He had to get back to his security blanket, his safe place---his parents. They know where he went and helped him get there. They would die by firing squad before telling the law where he is (or where they took him). He cannot survive on his own. He cant cope with hardship or stress.

Does it disgust you that millions of Americans will spend an hour or two watching Law and Order reruns tonight instead of studying the problem at the border? True crime stories...especially with elements you find in this crime...a runaway fugitive whose last known location was an alligator-infested swamp...fascinate people. Get the frick over it, and get the frick over yourself.

Sorry pal. This is a pretty fricking stupid comment.

Should I be disgusted that you drive by hospitals routinely and don’t think about the real people who are inside who will be dead before the day is over (not COVID-related)? There is tragedy and suffering all around us but there is also hope and joy. You’d go crazy if you focused on just one or the other.

This is one of the most elaborate murder suicides that I’ve ever seen. Well done Brian I guess.
