Sometimes’s situations arise and I hope you decide to help her out. Sounds like she is in a bad situation and having her mother pass is a tough thing to cope with. It sounds like you and your wife have tried to put yourselves in a position not to have parental responsibilities and I commend you for that but it’s family. I’d step up and help anyway you can that is reasonable. It can be very gratifying to help others in need. As you grow old you may be the one in need and dependent on her.

Maybe start with renaming the thread to something coherent like " Should I let my niece move in?"

My bad, guess I should have put in the original post that she has had a little trouble in the past. Very small things, thieving small things that don't belong to her and without going into a whole thing she has just been a troubled child. No my wife and I do not have kids and don't ever foresee us having any. I guess I'm a little leery
I don't want to have to be constantly checking on things in my house to see if they are missing. But I also want to help her get on the straight and narrow

Think of the hot friends she’ll bring over

Those things can possibly be fixed/changed but hearing that she has had a troubled past(most kids have) but she actually graduated High School has me wanting you to give her a chance.

How would having a high school graduate live with you for a while take away any freedoms? It ain't like you will be changing diapers or some shite. You wanna go out on the town? Tell her not to trash your house while you're gone. Pretty simple and you are helping out a family member.

That’s why the ground rules have to be set up front and followed consistently. Think out exactly what you expect and express it to her beforehand. If she can’t follow through, she probably doesn’t actually want your help.

OP should feel like an a-hole for posting this and even asking the question.
You should be in a truck headed down there to get her and her stuff.

She's not a toddler, can you not help her out and still do what you want? I would imagine a high school graduate can handle wiping her on arse and making her own sandwhich if you leave for a few days.

Is this a troll? If not, I’d be embarrassed. How about step up and show some compassion to your niece and y’all stop treating her like a stray cat. She didn’t ask for her mother to pass —- she’s acting out because she doesn’t have anyone caring for her.

Sit down with her, agree on a 5-year-plan, then take her in.

This is how I see this going down if she lives with you. Every single minor little thing she does that is out of your norm, you will get annoyed. Example: She takes a cup with her from your cabinet to her car and then it disappears.
Little things like that will add up no matter what ground rules are put in place and then you will end up resenting her and asking her to move out in a very short amount of time. You nor your wife are accustomed to having other people in your home and "upsetting your routine" is unavoidable.

First thing I'd want to learn is why living with your sister is not so great a situation. Is that the fault of the niece acting out or just your sister not liking the idea of taking care of someone she didn't spawn?
If it is more your nieces fault, then there's ground rules that need to be set in stone even before you consider letting her move in. A disruptive, annoying teen can throw a monkey wrench in any living situation. They'll test their limits and yours on a daily basis if allowed to.
If she's a good kid, then I would be hard pressed to turn my back without at least giving her a chance to go forward in life in a stable environment.

To Walker, I a few people that might be able to give her job. It's just her troubled pass that worries me. Also when they do (did) visit, I always pretty much let my nieces and nephews do what they wanted (within reason). I am the "fun Uncle". But, that's not how it would be if I let her move in. There would have to be ground rules. Only thing is I think I already portrayed in her mind what it would be like if she moved in. Then if I'm tuff on her I feel like that could spiral down quick. And I know in my heart I could never kick her out of my house if she isn't following my rules.
