This professor is WAYYYY overthinking this.

She is arguing that blacks should be on the jury because she knows they will improperly evaluate the reasonable man standard to include race as a consideration.

it's a two-part test for self-defense--
one did the defendant act as a reasonable and prudent person would,
and two,
juror steps into the shoes of the defendant and considers their unique experiences, physical characteristics, specialized training, etc. But race is not an appropriate consideration.

She's arguing the opposite that race should be a factor and that isn't the law

That fast with them having to do murder first tells me that it is guilty on murder.

I don’t see them getting the acquittal on murder in order to convict on manslaughter this quick.

For sure murder. They probably read through the charge, took a vote, and the rest of the time was spent for the foreman to sign the paperwork

I don't get the dooming from people about including manslaughter as an option. It seems pretty standard.

It would been ok if the prosecution actually had to prove Anthony stabbed him and intended to commit serious bodily harm that is dangerous to human life.

They didn’t. Both sides argued murder versus self-defense.

Claiming that using immediate deadly force in self-defense was justified isn’t valid for manslaughter. Thats a claim admitting the killing would otherwise be murder outside of it being self-defense.

It wasn’t something really even addressed in evidence to have the jury thinking of the differences during the presentation of the evidence. It muddies the water a little and forces them to apply evidence they heard and saw while determining between murder or self-defense to reckless in manslaughter after the fact.

It also gives a way out for any who do not like the idea convicting of a teen of murder regardless of evidence but would have if murder or acquittal were only options as murder was proven.

I have wondered why the defense did not try to push manslaughter from the beginning, but I guess the family listen to their advisor. It was have been difficult, but reasonable doubt in murder charge forcing fall back to manslaughter would have been easier than the self-defense claim. May have been able to settle for less jail time than from jury and get all this over with quicker. Fundraisers were more important I guess.

Guilty

This was a very easy case despite what everyone wanted you to beleive

Every legal observer who witnessed testimony came to the same conclusion: Its over. Its open and shut

I'm going to assume the jury ate lunch before starting deliberations in earnest

Say an hour for lunch... that means they took barely more than an hour to come back with a verdict

That's guilty on murder

the instructions have them evaluating the definition of murder as the first step. if they could not get to an agreement o the 1st step, then they would ponder manslaughter.

if they believed the definition of manslaughter did not fit, then not guilty

unless it was 12-0 not guilty from the jurors at the start, this quick of a turn around means there was not big discussion or holdout on the 1st charge......

a long deliberation usually means one or two holdouts on the charge....they will deliberate for a while before moving on to the next charge.
