Volkswagen

that was a test designed to force the death of diesels.

the TDI was a car that got like 48mpg and cost like 16,000 dollars.

but OMG when you stomp the gas a diesel engine won't pass a super sensitive emissions test

don't buy the bullshite propaganda lines from the regulatory agencies and their media buddies. that was intentional.

Toyota has been slipping since the introduction of the second generation Tundra. The first gen Tundra was all Toyota. Not the biggest, not the baddest but a bulletproof and comfortable truck. Starting in 07 they wanted to keep up with the American brands and everything got bigger but not at the same quality level as before. Today, I wouldn't consider a new Toyota at their current premium over other brands with arguably better vehicles.

Myth.

I have been around car forums for 25 years and have been ask for advice about what car to buy by lots of family and friends and safety is one of the issues that rarely ever come up. Ask 1000 people how many MPG there car gets, how reliable it is or how fast it is from 0-60 and you will get a ton of answers. Ask the same 1000 people what their vehicle scores are from NHTSA of IIHS and you might get a couple of answers. There was a time that this was in the zeitgeist but it was because manufacturers pushed it in ads at a time when testing standards increased and there were huge discrepancies between cars. Today safety is buried in the online promotion copy of a manufacturer's website. Cars across the board are all so much safer than in the past that it is a tertiary issue in the vast majority of buyer's decisions.

the tundras are having turbo and main bearing problems, junked motors inside a 36k mi warranty.

it seems like the SUV's is an airbag activation issue.

all the manufacturers are running into problems because we have 6,000lb vehicles they're trying to half-electrify and push around with overworked, overcomplicated, boosted V6's. the 250k toyota is a thing of the past without a simpler, reliable NA engine.

good podcast on the topic

Correct. Nicer paint and leather isn't really worth the extra price for me. I'd have to REALLY like the Lexus styling to spend more for what's basically the same vehicle.

Even in a Lexus there's a good chance you're not getting real leather. Need to go up two trim levels to get actual leather in the TX (base and Premium get Nuluxe).

We bought a TX in April, largely because the Grand Highlanders were so hard to find. Toyota dealers were tacking on thousands of extras on top of list price, for nitrogen filled tires, paint sealant, light packages, locking lugnuts and such. Found a dealer in Ft Lauderdale that took over $3k off the TX list price, with no dealer add-ons - within $1,000 of the Grand Highlanders we looked at in LA with similar options.

Wife (no pics) has been happy with it thus far.

You’re just donating money to Toyota for an overpriced badge package.

There are not many Lexus products that don't have a very closely related Toyota counterpart

If you buy one coming off a lease the price is very comparable to whatever Toyota model you’re considering with similar features. I’ve had two ES350s and both were flawless.

Sucks too because when Toyota jumps the tank, what’s left that is relatable?

Ding ding ding. And the American consumer doesn’t get it.

Doesn’t help that the last few big NA engines in domestic trucks all seem to have one issue or another - lifter failures, mainly. Hell I thought the 5.0 in the F150 and 7.3 in the F250 were safe options, but tons of people reporting issues with those.

If I had to buy a vehicle tomorrow that I thought would last 10 years, I have no clue what I’d buy. Everything is CVT, touchscreen, force induction, auto-stop/start bullshite.

Disclaimer: I own a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and it has been a fantastic vehicle, but I am completely turned off from going “up market” with the Toyota brand, which is a shame because my wife loves the new Seqouia.

Same here, although I bought in late 2023.

The lexus TX was widely available with generous discounts. I could barely find a single grand highlander on a lot. Made my choice easy.

The Tundra main bearing issue is simply Toyota failing to remove all the debris from the block after machining.

Has nothing to do with overworking the engine.

The airbag issue is another defect in engineering.

Quit trying to blame Toyota's failures on the government.

*I'm sure them falsifying compliance test results is also the government's fault, right?

TBH I feel like Audi does a much better job distinguishing their vehicles from VW’s. I would never buy one, but there are a handful of Audis that I do really like.

Not that Lexus is bad. They are on par with Cadillac in the sense that all of their crossovers/SUVs are based on mainstream vehicles while their performance sedans are unique to the brand. Lexus is far better IMO than Acura or Lincoln in that respect. Not as good as BMW or Mercedes.
